At the moment requirements in Victoria state that you can build a 20 square metre deck without building approval. Can I leave a 2cm gap between the two decks and classify that as 2 separate decks which are both under 20 square metres? The reason I ask is because I would love to build a deck that goes near my fence, but on my building permit for my house build it says there is only a distance of 2 metres to the fence, whereas in actuality there is about 7 metres. I back onto council land, so im not sure If I would be approved a building permit for a deck because they will see that im proposing to build a 5 metre length deck and as far as they know ive only got 2 metres.
