Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Dec 02, 2013 3:08 pm Does anyone have any experience with installing retractable flyscreens to their alfresco or verandah? We are building in an area with Bushfire rating 12.5, I believe there is no requirement for the doors to the aflresco to have flyscreens, let alone the the sides of the alfresco opening to the back yard, only the windows. However I also understand that the mesh used on the windows has to be a certain weight, type etc. However, for retractable flyscreens on alfresco openings does the type of mesh used have to comply with BAL 12.5 requirements even though it is not mandatory to have flyscreens there, and the flyscreens aren't actually on a door or window? In other words, would a mesh that could not be used on a window in a BAL 12.5 area be used for an application that is not mandated by the BAL 12.5 requirements? Also has anyone installed a retractable flyscreen on their alfresco, and how much did it cost? Re: Retractable Flyscreens for Alfresco in BAL 12.5 area 3Apr 22, 2014 10:54 am We're using - http://www.freedomscreens.com.au/ We have wooden stacker doors to patio/al fresco. Approx 2.5 mts opening either way - from a corner. Re: Retractable Flyscreens for Alfresco in BAL 12.5 area 4Apr 22, 2014 9:29 pm How much was it (if you don't mind me asking)? Our corner sliding stacker doors to the alfresco is 3.8m x 2.95m so would definitely cost more. Our corner sliding stacker doors to the alfresco is 3.8m x 2.95m so would definitely cost more. Unfortunately quite a bit - $2-3k from memory. Its such a hard spot - and to get them to cover the lot is hard. Most companies aren't interested. If your home is a new build the BAL rating would need to be complied with by the home builder. Meaning your home should already have protection from ember attack installed.
