Could someone who knows a bit about this type of job please offer me some advice. I plan to grout / mortar the bricks together. What should the base consist of? At the moment I have gravel down, I was told I would need to lay the brick onto a sand base, have them all in place then grout the bricks with mortar to hold them to one another in place? Is this right? Re: Red Brick Path 2Nov 20, 2013 11:18 am athomasd Wanting to make use of some solid red bricks I have by putting in a path in my yard. Re: Red Brick Path 3Nov 29, 2013 1:07 pm Bricks are basically thicker-than-usual pavers. Treat them as such. The problem with mortar is that it will crack over time and leave unsightly joins. Use a fine-grain sand instead - as with pavers. The base should consist of any aggregate which has been packed down with a whacker-packer. Then coarse sand, about 2-3 inches worth is roughly spread level and packed down. Then you level off the sand, the pros use guide rails sunk into the sand, scraping away any excess. After you lay down the bricks, find a large piece of cardboard, place it under the whacker and pack down the whole path. Finish by pouring over a bag of fine sand and sweep into the joins. Packing down the base layers of aggregate and sand is THE most important part of paving. You get that right and the path will stay true for decades. If you don't, the path will settle unevenly and look terrible after a few months.
