Browse Forums Outdoor Living Re: Pergola/Deck complete - help with next stage...... 6Dec 04, 2013 8:36 pm Hi Jericho and Agape Jericho HHCiB, I thought I'd chime on on the idea of cutting off rear access for cars. It does seems to be the modern way of living - car parking dominating the front of the house. However in my opinion, this trend has gone way overboard to the point where the front of modern houses look like garages with a house tacked on. The modern spec-house layouts have zero sense of entrance and that appals me. I do totally agree with you about houses appearing to be garages with houses tacked on. Garages seem to be given major priority these days. However, regardless of whether we end up blocking full access to the rear of our yard, any carport or garage addition to the side of our house, won't make our house appear 'garage' heavy. It would only be the width of the driveway (ie single width) and would for the most part (at least 1/2 to 3/4) be down the side of the house - not all out in front. And wouldn't encroach on our entrance or front of house in any way. I must admit, I am starting to also agree with you regarding using pavers as opposed to deck for some contrast (although, I am leaning towards bluestone pavers - not sandstone - at this stage). And yes, then can maybe keep access open (mind you, we have a big dip where the current driveway joins the lawn and this would need to be filled in (major filling required) or ultimately needs a small step/retaining wall??? And thanks too Agape. Yes, I agree with you also about it being a nice relaxing area. Which is why I want to incorporate a small garden there also (either in ground or lots of pots of varying heights/screen) - to create a little bit of an 'oasis' - maybe a small water feature for some soothing sound. Anyway, all on the back burner for now. Too much else going on. Hope to get back to the luxury of being able to spend time thinking/planning this out more over the Xmas break and in the New Year. Cheers for your input. Anyone else's thoughts also welcome. HHCIB Is there a building permit? RU in Victoria?
