Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Aug 22, 2013 11:07 am I have just built a circular firepit out of garden edge blocks (2 blocks high- 250mm) and I'm told they might explode when they get hot. Anyone know whether they would be okay if I lined them with firebricks or fireclay, or do I have to start again with a different material? Re: Firepit 2Aug 23, 2013 7:21 pm Ordinary bricks often have moisture or air trapped inside and hence the explosions. Fire bricks are made from a different material and pose no such threat. @builderforlife Building inspector and passionate about construction When you need an expert to take a look. Firepit 4Aug 23, 2013 8:56 pm It all depends on how big and bright your fires are going to be but if its just to toast some marshmallows I'd say you line the inside with some refractory cement or bricks. You may also want to look for "kiln bricks". http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Firepit 7Sep 05, 2013 10:59 am Oww! Thanks, Stewie. I've played it safe (at great cost I might say) and mortared in a layer of firebricks with fire clay mortar. I'll be very disappointed if the buggars explode now. Reading a lot of online stuff from the States a lot of people agree with you. Seems it's not uncommon to make fire pits out of garden blocks there. |
