Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Mar 08, 2013 11:49 am I'm wondering about the different options for flooring on the alfresco. I thought I wanted decking but realising that although they look great they do require a bit of maintenance, and can need redoing in time too. What have other people done instead of decking that can look quite nice and be reasonably cost effective? Our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64705 Re: Tell me about the 'floor' of your alfresco? 2Mar 08, 2013 12:33 pm I plan on getting liquid limestone. No worrying about weeds and ant colonies. Roughly $55 - $60 per sqm. Our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64705 Re: Tell me about the 'floor' of your alfresco? 6Mar 09, 2013 4:22 am we are also tiling sorry no pics as tiler has not yet started Re: Tell me about the 'floor' of your alfresco? 7Mar 09, 2013 8:22 am Exposed aggregate with 800 x 800 saw cuts......looks like big paving stone. Easy to maintain, excellent drainage, non-slip; love it. We have deck too....will spend much more time maintaining this Liquid Limestone - really liked the look/product but very expensive in Victoria. Liquid Limestone made us consider the 'saw cut' exposed aggregate. Pictures on Blog. Tiles can be a problem when wet - so non-slip is a good idea. Re: Tell me about the 'floor' of your alfresco? 9Mar 09, 2013 10:19 am great ideas here, thanks everyone. I do really like the exposed aggregate look. Debra- wow, your house looks GREAT! Debra- wow, your house looks GREAT! Thanks meowsy - very pleased with how the house has evolved. If you go with the exposed aggregate stress to the contractor the size saw cuts you want in the Alfresco......our tradie made sure his contact could do this. Remainder of aggregate - paths and driveway were standard expansion cuts. I think DH is currently looking at sandstone or sandstone-look stuff. Re: Tell me about the 'floor' of your alfresco? 13Mar 10, 2013 9:52 am Slab? Mine doesn't have a slab? Is that because I deleted the paving provided by builder? We had paving at the old house a deck at our new house. Yes decks require more maintenance but they are A LOT cooler so it means we get more use. Today we started looking at non-slip tiles or sandstone paving... and now we are just more confused. We need to make a decision as to what to put in the alfresco and along the left of the back of the house to the edge of a pool. We are thinking decking might be too much as we have dark wood floors inside, might need to break it up a bit... Must we pour concrete for decking or tiling/paving. Which is cooler and more cost effective? Re: Tell me about the 'floor' of your alfresco? 16Mar 15, 2013 8:51 pm We used Merbau timber tiles. Wanted decking but something different. Yes it requires maintenance but as its not in direct sunlight 24/7, its not as frequent as say a pool deck. In saying that it takes about 20min to give it an oil which is really nothing when you think about it. Supply was $57 m2. That was pick up, no delivery. I laid them myself. Quite easy depending how fussy you are. They just lay side by side with an aluminium joiner but the work is getting them level as the slab is clearly not. So they did require a lot of packing here and there, then they are liquid nailed down. Once you get going it is relatively quick but then like tiling, there's the cut ins around the edges which takes time. Very happy with the overall result which has been down for about a year and a half now. What I like is they can be laid in whatever pattern you wish from checkers like mine or rows or sections or just running in the same direction. Here's some progress photos...
