Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Feb 24, 2013 5:49 pm Hello, I have no building knowledge at all but I want to have a go at building an outdoor firepit with a circular permanent seating structure. I would like it to be large enough to fit approximately 20 people comfortably. The area gets very cold and windy in winter so I was also thinking of putting a garden bed behind the seating to further plant hedging to block the wind. I was thinking along the lines of besser blocks and rendering, but cannot find anything on the web. I am thinking that the firepit will be approximately a foot high and 1.5 metres across. Anyone have any ideas or can show me plans on the web somewhere that I can have a look at I will be most appreciative. I am a long way from the city so access to certain types of materials may be an issue as well. Thanks all. Re: Outdoor firepit and permanent seating structure 3Mar 09, 2013 6:48 am Try google. I like the look of this one - http://www.serrastone.com/services/Barb ... ire-Pit-(1).jpg Stone always looks nicer, but it is more costly. Re: Outdoor firepit and permanent seating structure 4Mar 18, 2013 6:13 pm I'm glad you made this thread. I have been thinking of this for a while. I am thinking of using bessa blocks and rendering over them then using merbu decking to make seating around and making cushions I can put on when we use the area. I have been having problems trying to find out if bessa blocks are ok or would I have to use the same sort of bricks they use to make chimneys! I will try and post a photo of something along the lines I thinking of. We spend every weekend outside and at the moment use some thing that looks similar to a washing machine insert. I want something more permenant set up that looks a lot nicer. We like to cook chestnuts in the embers and mashmallows over the fire so I am trying to design something that we can reach the embers with maybe it will have to only have three sides with a grate in the front so we can do that. These a rock-filled cages. You could easily make seating. This site will give you some ideas. http://www.gabion1.com.au/index.htm Build thread: here Land Nov 12, Contract 6/07/13, Consent 15/08/13, Start 20/09/13, Slab 25/09/13, Frame 4/10/13, Brick 21/10/13, Roof 2/11/13, Lock-up 17/12/13, Handover 3/3/14 Re: Outdoor firepit and permanent seating structure 7Mar 18, 2013 7:36 pm Thanks everyone, like the idea of the gabions, would probably make it easier, might be a little hard to do the seat wall though. I would like it too be in a semi-circular shape, and a suggestion from a friend was to leave the other side open as people can than pull up there own chairs if they so wish. I think it would be a lot easier to do three sides of a square if I used besser blocks.. I will keep looking. Thanks all Re: Outdoor firepit and permanent seating structure 8Mar 18, 2013 9:07 pm Thanks Moxie for that thread link Looks like I will be a while on there checking them all out lol Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Outdoor firepit and permanent seating structure 9Mar 20, 2013 5:03 pm Been toying around with the same idea so I have been filling up my outdoor insperations folder up on Pinterest. Thanks all I think building the base out of bessa block with a curve the smooth out with render. Anyway, back to reality, with the Besser blocks can one still make a curve and then render, is there any instructions anywhere on how to do this? A friend was also saying that it is best to put the fire on levels in the pit, with an open area big enough to fit a shovel in to catch ash and discard and also to allow air to draw up through the fire, makes sense to me as most fires inside use this approach. Again, I have limited knowledge so if anyone has any knowledge or instructions re: Besser Blocks please direct me to that area. Thanks again all There is no reason why building contract reconciliation cannot be done prior to handover, if the builder won't do it get someone to do it for you.
