Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Dec 27, 2012 4:51 pm We have an outdoor kitchen in our new house and the benchtop and cooker sits against the brickwork on the back of the house. We do a lot of wok cooking and this generates a bit of cooking oil splatter. To the side of the cooktop is also a brick windowsill (built with bricks laid at an angle). We had originally planed to run a sheet of stainless steel up behind the cooker to the bottom of the rangehood but I think the oil will slowly also build up on the windowsill and as it will penetrate the brick it will stain. We have an other idea to tile the splashback and also cover the windowsill and may still go with that. Our exposed aggregate driveway has just been sealed and we have some clear sealer left over. I was wondering if we could just use this to seal the bricks and have a brick splashback. Has anyone ever seen this done? Will it seal the mortar or just soak in? Will the small holes in the brick face be repositories for cooking oil? Re: Sealing bricks for splashback in outdoor kitchen 2Jan 11, 2013 10:25 am I would be not recommend using a clear sealer on bricks, most clear sealer's that are used for concrete are solvent based acrylics. Clay bricks need to breathe, a concrete seal may bloom (go cloudy and peel) after a few months, then needs to be stripped off. Any sealer that is used need to allow moisture vapour transmission. I would suggest using a high quality penetrating sealer that resists oils. I use Sealer's Choice Gold, i've found that it is easy to use and isn't toxic. As a professional applicator I have never had a complaint of staining from customers and i've been using it for 6 years. I use it for about 70% of the work I do. But these days there are so many sealer's you just need to make sure you use one that is both oleophobic & hydrophobic http://aquamix.com.au/natural-look-sealers Hi, planning on using the attached stone pieces in my bathroom.
