Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Nov 21, 2012 12:30 pm My garden is slowly relocating into my gutters because of 2 stubborn minor birds that are determined to relocate it there. Any one got a way to get rid of these things for good? I'm in suburbia so the most obvious method is probably going to be frond upon by the neighbors and end up with the police at my front door. Re: How to kill a Minor bird 2Nov 21, 2012 4:37 pm Hope that someone can help with a solution for getting rid of these mongrels!! We are having the same problem with our gutters and we are on a slope with drop edge beams so of course they deposit all their cr@p in the highest part of the house making it hard to get to. We bought a couple of owls from Bunnings and they worked for about 2 seconds. They also come in to the alfresco and sit on the chairs and poop all over them and the floor tiles and we have to keep getting out the Gerni to clean up the mess. One solution may be to get a dog that hates birds, our son is doing renovations and we are looking after his daschund and he hates birds and chases them away all the time and we have noticed how much cleaner the alfresco is. There'd be instructions for the traps online somewhere I assume. http://fennerschool-associated.anu.edu. ... umane.html - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Renovated...a LOT. Built in 2013. They are governed by their biological time clock and will soon move away and set up home elsewhere. For a longer term solution, grow some long flowering Grevilleas to attract Butcher Birds. A long flowering medium shrub is the Grevillea superb while the Grevillea Elegance (longastyla - Johnsoni) is a Summer - Autumn flowering small tree that provides a real feature in the garden. http://hotkey.net.au/~taravalley_adsl/p ... uperb.html http://www.koalanativeplants.com.au/com ... nt_id=2056 3in1 Supadiverta. Re: How to kill a Minor bird 6Dec 04, 2012 6:59 am We found attracting other birds and disturbing the mynors was the answer. ALSO - not leaving food (dog/cat) outside. They are real scavengers. I know maggies do it too but maggies will help get rid of them. When you see them just keep moving them on - they may find an easier spot to live. Re: How to kill a Minor bird 7Dec 22, 2012 10:05 am Apparently there's no cure for the common Koel ... Not sure about the minor ... Re: How to kill a Minor bird 8Dec 23, 2012 8:18 pm Could always put some sort of gutter protection in place, allot of people up here use rolled up chicken wire, that way no blockage occurs. You do have to make sure the gutters are clear of debris from time to time though. Re: How to kill a Minor bird 9Jan 13, 2013 7:16 pm Discouraging them is one thing, but take care if you want to kill them. The RSPCA doesn't look favourably on cruelty towards to any animals, even if they're pests. Apparently there are legal methods though: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/s ... 5823032108 Re: How to kill a Minor bird 10Jul 02, 2013 9:28 pm The only way to rid yourself of minors , is to destroy their nest, take into account, they can rebuild it in the same spot in 3 hrs. So trick is to block the area in which they are trying to inhabit ! They'll move on, as when they are pesterring us suburbanites, its 99% when they're rady to nest n lay ! Apparently there are legal methods though: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/s ... 5823032108 Pretty hypocritical given the RSPCA put down so many animals that they cant re home... but thats another discussion Do what you have to do i say. You can buy traps but apparently they are pretty smart birds and will avoid them after a while. Trying to move them on by destroying their nests only works if your prepared to destroy them for weeks on end. I tried that and it took so long i just gave up and removed the shade cloth Re: How to kill a Minor bird 12Aug 12, 2013 8:27 am We have a peewee that seems to think it owns the area around us - sh*ts over everything and is a real nuisance. We shew it away and have an "owl" - all to no avail ... Re: How to kill a Minor bird 14Sep 05, 2013 10:58 am The Magpies are the answer. When we moved into our place 18 years ago there were quite a few Indian Mynah birds around but then I started to feed the odd Magpie and Kookaburra that visited every now and then. After a while a couple of other Magpies from the same family group started to hang around and the Mynahs disappeared as they used to get hassled. We haven't had any round here since. Stewie |
