Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Apr 01, 2008 12:03 pm Hi all.
We are looking into options to screen off our side yard from the road. This side yard will be the majority of our backyard, and will be where we have our outdoor eating area etc. We don't know whether to screen off level with the front of the house to the boundary fence, which would require us to put in a small access gate as the meterbox and gas meter will be located on the exterior wall (about 5 m length), or to allow more space for front yard (which in our opinion is a waste of space, but don't need a gate) and screen off from behind the said meters. We both like the look of the horizontal wood fencing (like decking) but don't know the best and most cost effective solution to do this. We would consider the fabricated "wood" but it would have to be worth our while in the long run (maintenance wise) as they appear a lot more expensive. Any suggestions? What would you do? You may be sunning yourself on a warm day, and in comes meter man.. You may be having pj day, out in the yard with kids, and in comes meter man... You may end up with a pet dog, and in comes meter man... and gets BITTEN ![]() Just for more privacy than anything else. Oh and you dont want them leaving the gate open for the kids to get out. The horozontal look is a nice one. Paula Re: Side fence options 4Apr 01, 2008 12:36 pm Ray, do you have any pets? The reason why i ask this as some meter readers are tardy with closing/locking gates when they leave?
In my opinion i'd place the fence just behind the meters, but if you really wanted to hide them from the front, place a smaller, parrallel fence from the house out say 2 m's, then you could always hide the bins there too...perhaps? We found a great product at the Home Show called Future Wood. Did you see them? Check out their website: http://www.futureweood.com.au We can't be bothered with the maintenance aspect of the real timber when it's exposed 100% of the time? Re: Side fence options 5Apr 01, 2008 12:48 pm No pets (and no plan to either).
With the "gate" I was thinking maybe something like a self closing pool gate mechanism? But I understand the point about people coming in the backyard... not ideal. Ray. Agree totally with having fencing behind meters, for privacy reasons. BTW check out this supplier for slat fencing : http://www.metalartindustries.com.au/su ... allery.htm Note that there are no fixings eg screws, bolts... as supplied by Futurewood. Good luck Re: Side fence options 7Apr 15, 2008 9:53 am Guys there was some great links here for a project I need to do to which is screen off a shed.....thanks.
Ray...I'd also like some idea of the longevity of the future wood but it looks like a great product and I concur with the general views...fence behind the meter. Another option - which would look ordinary from the road - is a less expensive fence but lined internally with either brush fencing (which from experience I've had fades after a bout two years) or bamboo screen so that the entertaining area is nicely finished.....another one to think about maybe.... ![]() Paula....I'm concerned about your preoccupation with meter men....and I do seem to recall you were thinking of getting a pool for the new place......hmmmm DH may need to be worried. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Side fence options 8Apr 15, 2008 10:00 am Quote: Another option - which would look ordinary from the road - is a less expensive fence but lined internally with either brush fencing (which from experience I've had fades after a bout two years) In the new place, we have bursh fencing which looks fantastic. I'm concerned that it will fade though, it will loose the desired look. If you re-read the post I wanted to keep the meter man OUT! the pool man is more than welcome ![]() Paula Re: Side fence options 9Apr 15, 2008 10:26 am I would also put the fence behind the meter. I also think it will look better to have a tiny bit more front yard, even though it's wasted space, it will look better from the street.
