Browse Forums Outdoor Living Re: Joists timber and size 41Oct 18, 2012 8:15 pm Ok, I've got all the hardware and tomorrow I'm getting the timber delivered. As I'm using double joists the guy at Doyles recommended to paint them to prevent water/moisture in between. Remember there is a roof over this deck but still can get some weather. Should I paint them? what kind of paint? how many coats? What about the the places where I cut the TP? I'm also using laminated Merbau posts and about 150mm will be below the deck, should I paint/protect them with something? Cheers Re: Joists timber and size 42Oct 18, 2012 9:20 pm no need to paint the T/P laminated joists..... regarding the merbau posts (im assuming for pergola), well its heavily debated. Some say wrap in plastic prior to cementing in, some say dont, some say coat in this or that.... I'd personally bolt them to a post anchor and the cement that into the hole for maximum prevention from rot etc.... I'll be using bolt down brackets for the posts fixed to a elevated concrete slab, so no contact with the ground at all. Dont worry about the paint then. If its clear of the ground I wouldnt bother. You could, but I couldnt see the value. Posts into ground different story. Re: Joists timber and size 46Oct 29, 2012 7:40 pm Hi there. I started last weekend and I'm still working with the new 90x90 posts. I'll put some pictures as soon as I start with the joists. Ended getting really good prices for the brackets and timber at Doyles in Mitchelton (QLD) Re: Joists timber and size 48Nov 21, 2012 1:13 pm Hi there. I finally replaced all the metal posts and started with the first joist. The weather didn't let me work the last two weekends so the progress is not much. These are the new posts, I still need to trim down a couple of them I still haven't sorted out what I'm going to do with the steps.. if I should know down those walls.. I'm going to put deck on the front and lateral walls as well, just about 30cm to hide the wall a bit... don't know how yet.. maybe fixing the 90x45 joist on the side (45) and then laying the deck over it...
