I also am sorry to say, but there are some massive future problems with that deck......
sorry but it's true
Care to explain?
140 widths, 800 is pushing it.. I would say it would be a little bouncy.

Re: the building of my deck :) 22Jun 25, 2012 5:06 pm Nothing to do with the width, 25mm thick hardwood deck has a max. 600mm span (this is centre to centre) This is AS 1684. the standard is a minimum, you will get "bounce" at 600mm let alone 800mm. Using standard methods of construction probably would have worked out at the same cost if not cheaper Also may I ask why we should never trust a tradie? Because 95% of the are thieves.. my deck quote was $14k/$15k and $15.5k.. 70sqm of decking, my build price. $4k. Lets not even get started about the painters from next door who robbed my place the day after I moved in. 140 x 25 across a 800 span is pushing boundaries, but prob still feels ok. I have 650 spans out the front and its fine, not bouncing at all. Re: the building of my deck :) 25Jun 25, 2012 5:41 pm Maybe cost seemed high because they were building it to Australian standards and it would have been legal. Anyway. OP. 800 span is too much. Re: the building of my deck :) 27Jun 25, 2012 6:20 pm I'm gathering you built it your self for $4K, you probably needed to spend another $2K on materials then your quotes don't sound to bad. Landscape Design & Construction http://cherub.squarespace.com/ Re: the building of my deck :) 29Jun 25, 2012 6:51 pm That is a pretty sensible option you will save yourself probably 1/3 labour cost, but have it built to standards Landscape Design & Construction http://cherub.squarespace.com/ Re: the building of my deck :) 30Jun 25, 2012 6:52 pm that top deck at those spans will bow, bend and bounce like crazy in a few years..... not to mention the 90x90 "posts" used in the sub to bow and crack after a handful of seasons...... as someone stated, the materials used that define the structural integrity are incorrect and not designed or fit for the purpose, then comes the incorrect excessive spans, that will lead to bowing and bounce if not now, then certainly down the track. I cant imagine a party there in 3 years time with 25 people on that deck........ sorry it's not what people want to hear I know, but there are regs and formula's for a reason, even with over-engineering stuff..... I am not a pro deck builder, but father was a chippy and I have built maybe 15-20 decks over time, seen the good and the bad. It's all relative to ones expectations, and as long as the OP is happy then that is all that matters, but for longevity of that deck, sorry to say it is not going to happen, with that material at those spans. Re: the building of my deck :) 31Jun 25, 2012 7:40 pm So what can i do ? Can i move the joists in closer to 400. Centers ,or is my only option to. Use this 1200bucks worth of wood as fire wood and replace the joists ? What can i use then with my stirups at the positons there at ? and ledger is 90x90 im guessing thats gonna be fire wood too , Last time i believe anything from a hardware store Re: the building of my deck -not fun any more over it ! 32Jun 25, 2012 8:26 pm could i replace the 90x90 joists with 100x50s on the stirups and add more in to bring it to 400centers for the flooring ?
or am i reading this span tables wrong ? http://www.hardwood.timber.net.au/docs/decks.pdf my only worry is the concrete slab 3m x4m that im going over , but i i have to chizel it then so be it , with adding the more joists would i be able to use the the h4 90x90 im pulling out cementing these in the ground to rest the new joists on Re: the building of my deck :) 33Jun 25, 2012 8:30 pm I thought it looked well done...... Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: the building of my deck ---- not fun any more over it ! 34Jun 25, 2012 9:05 pm ply-boi if I can just throw a couple of bob in. The 140x25 deck ive used quite a bit and your right there won't be much bounce with that stuff. I've used offcuts about 8' long as a plank. What are you using to secure it? One of the problems I've found is it cups pretty bad once it gets some moisture back into it, so i'd use no less than a 50mm batten screw. Also be mindfull of your margins, 8-10mm is not excessive. I've seen it grow more than 6mm. With the 800 span I think you could put an intermediate joist between them purely to stop the cupping. Just clamp it up tight then screw through the deck into it. A 100x38 treated HW fence rail on edge would work fine. This is to stop the deck cupping when it gets wet. Re: the building of my deck ---- not fun any more over it ! 36Jun 26, 2012 6:17 am Those span tables are for hardwood, would use 2/90 x 45mm in between. As last poster stated this timber is prone to cupping especially being so close to the ground. Ideally paint the under side before installation. Would also recommend 65mm screws for softwood joists Landscape Design & Construction http://cherub.squarespace.com/ Re: the building of my deck ---- not fun any more over it ! 37Jun 26, 2012 7:26 am Could the op perhaps redo the frame in h4 pine but instead of running the joists the way he has run 2x 90x45 pine bolted together the opposite length ways parraell with the house as bearers then use 90x45 joist hanger brackets spaced 400mm apart for the joists using 90x45 h4 pine again for the joists? This would solve the 400 dilemma and also keep deck at same planned height. Yes the hard wood posts essentially would be a waste but could sell them on gumtree to someone building fence and the pine should be about $4.50per lineal meter http://www.betterthansheets.com.au - Why use sheets for curtains in your brand new home use Better Than Sheets Temporary Paper blinds instead! Re: the building of my deck ---- not fun any more over it ! 38Jun 26, 2012 7:49 am ply-boi What do u mean by the 100x38 where abouts ? Im using 8g 50mm screw square head in ss302 So u say put a few more joist in of 90x90 so bring then to 400 ? Run them parallel and in between your existing 90x90, so your deck will be secured every 400. They are simply tieing the boards together to try and avoid cupping. There not secured to anything except the the deck. Don't use anything pine, the screws wont hold. Re: the building of my deck ---- not fun any more over it ! 39Jun 26, 2012 8:15 am So the best option would be to replace the joists with 2 of. The 90x45 h3? and my 90x90 to use as posts to support the new joists. If i cement them in the ground as there also h4 Re: the building of my deck :) 40Jun 26, 2012 8:43 am ply-boi So what can i do ?
