Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Apr 22, 2012 1:33 pm Hi everyone, My partner and I built a house 2 years ago, and we very luckily only have one neighbour. However, I would still love some privacy from them! They have small children, and their bedrooms face onto our kitchen and living rooms - which can get quite noisy! Also, we have to have our blinds down a third of the window at all times as otherwise I feel like they are looking in on us and vice versa - which I absolutely hate! We have a standard 1.8m timber fence between us, and our house is elevated so it does not provide us with any privacy inside. I have been looking at putting a modular wall along the whole side of the house - 2.7m high. This is about 14m long along the side of the house, and we would put a deck there alongside the house to make it an extension of our patio / outdoor room. Has anyone else used a modular wall? What are the other alternatives? I'm not too sure about council regulations either (North Qld) - but I really just want some privacy and not to feel like I am sharing my house with my neighbours! Thanks Re: Modular Walls or other alternative 2Apr 23, 2012 1:34 pm Here on the Northern Beaches the max height is supposedly 1.8m for a wall on the boundary although you can get variances where one property is higher than the other. They also don't like solid walls for the full height. I'd be very surprised if the local council would let you go that high ( 2.7m ) or let it be a solid wall. Would it shade their property ? They may let you do a wall with slats or some other way to break it up. Go and see the council and see what they say. Stewie Re: Modular Walls or other alternative 4May 11, 2012 1:01 pm When our next-door neighbours wanted to do something similar to what you're proposing, the council required them to have written permission from us (we gave them the OK). The council will also want to know if any underground services lie under the proposed structure. You'd be unlucky, but it happens. Tracey's idea makes more financial sense than a wall. There are several attractive screening plants that would do the job. You don't need council permission, either. Hi We have a road close to our place and only an old flimsy wooden fence between us and the Neighbour closest to the road. Any ideas on a sound proof modular fence.
