Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Feb 11, 2008 10:34 am Can anyone please shed some light for me regarding decking and weep holes?
We are currently at the planning/drawing stage of our alfresco decking and want the decking to be level along the bottom of the sliding door so that there's no step down when you go out to the alfresco. However, there are weep holes around and if we were to deck as outlined above the weep holes would be at least half covered. Is this a good idea or should we stay away from even partially covering the weep hole? I've done some prior research and some suggest that if you were to do decking this way that you should leave a gap between the edge of the deck and the wall with the weep hole. I don't know if that would look any good. Any thoughts/opinions? It will hardly be noticed but will save you a great deal of problems, IF down the track you get White Ants…..you will have to move it anyway! NEVER cover or partially cover these weepholes. You mean gap? If so, how much of a gap? And my next door neighbour put a pergola up and they covered their weep hole partially. I thought maybe I could get away with it?! Up to…..but truly, after my experience I will never cover up my weepholes again. If you have concerns I would get professional advice from a pest guy. Wether your neighbour has done it not….doesn’t make it right! But at the end of the day there is still air flow and that's what the weep holes are for. Re: Decking and Weep Holes 8Feb 11, 2008 1:06 pm **Phoenix** Missy as long as there is adequate air flow to the weepholes i think you will be okay... This is where everyone gets it wrong! It’s not just the air flow under the slab it’s the light factor as well. The darker the space is, the better the white Ant can take over and do major damage before you are even aware of them being there! All fun and games till it happens to you, then it’s a matter of “Holly Sh**” now what will we do??????? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Decking and Weep Holes 9Feb 11, 2008 1:08 pm Weep holes could potentially be a point on entry for termites and by covering them up, you would not be able to inspect if there is any termite activity. Termites also hate sunlight so by covering the weepholes so you would be providing protection for the termites whilst they enter your house. I'm pretty sure there's a standard that states that weepholes must be a certain distance away from the ground.
Re: Decking and Weep Holes 10Feb 11, 2008 1:09 pm But Mish remember that all/most new houses being built have termite treatment A & B, added around the perimeter of the house (or is that only if you are in a termite prone area???)... but it is good to always check your slab/brickwork for any tunnels etc... Re: Decking and Weep Holes 11Feb 11, 2008 1:16 pm So did mine P!!!
And back when I built they used it FULL strength….not like now! So if anyone’s home shouldn’t have got them it was mine! But I covered up some of my weepholes………don’t ever assume for one moment, that you are safe from them…..I DID! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Decking and Weep Holes 12Feb 11, 2008 1:17 pm We had a crap load of termite damage to deal with when we renovated our last place in Glen Waverley, it cost more than it would have cost to demolish the place.
But we are still going to be building a deck similar to Matt's at our new place.... I know that the termite treatment provided will be fine, but we will still be vigient with checks occasionally. Re: Decking and Weep Holes 13Feb 11, 2008 1:20 pm Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅
The cottony looking tube running around the perimetre of the decking is termite treatement... Mish, are you saying that this stuff doesn't work? Or that it didnt in your case? After the numerous hours of study on the chemical they use and the effectiveness of this method I am fairly comfortable with the knowledge I am reasonably well protected... Re: Decking and Weep Holes 14Feb 11, 2008 1:20 pm OK……you are aware of them. That’s good!
But is YSSIM ??? Most people don’t even know what to look for. Did you get regular checks Mish???After we fixed the damage and had the house treated, we were told every 2-3 years i think to have an inspection done...even though the treatment was warranted for 7yrs... Re: Decking and Weep Holes 16Feb 11, 2008 1:26 pm Woah - you guys are fast. I look away for one minute and then there's a kazillion posts! Hehe
But much appreciated. Sorry about the gap/gape thing, Mish. Just mucking around. And you're right - just because they (neighbours) did it doesn't mean it's right. We could probably deck just below the weep hole and it will only be a few cm's below the door frame so shouldn't be that bad. But it does look nice, though, when it's all one level. [sneakersss] Re: Decking and Weep Holes 17Feb 11, 2008 1:27 pm The long white thing? We don't have one of those... [sneakersss] Re: Decking and Weep Holes 18Feb 11, 2008 1:28 pm [quote="mattwalker
Mish, are you saying that this stuff doesn't work? Or that it didnt in your case?...[/quote] No Matt I’m not saying it doesn’t work…it does!! But like other things…it hase loop holes after a period of time. YOU have done the right thing by adding extra protection along the boundary of your deck! But how many people do that? I get an inspection every 2 years…….It took only 1 year after I did renovations and the inspection for them to move in. I had my builders go right through the roof while they were ripping off ceiling plaster….not a white ant to be found. One year later……in ALL my wet areas! And came in via the SLAB! So, I’m not saying the treatment doesn’t work…..just we don’t need to make it easy for them. Hehe [sneakersss] Re: Decking and Weep Holes 20Feb 11, 2008 1:29 pm MIssy,
That pipe runs around the entire perimetre of our house. The treatment fluid is pumped into it and it disperses into the ground keeping the hungry little buggers away (hopefully) You are correct. Just read through all the ncc rules and 75mm is the minimum requirement for me. 4 11208 it depends on the natural ground level, if they excavated their boundary wall needed to be built as a retaining wall. If you filled, which sounds like the case then you… 1 7166 I know foam has been around since the 90's and CSR started manufacturing Hebel in 1989, so it's definitely possible 5 5515 |
