Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Oct 21, 2011 2:20 pm Hi Everyone I am looking at building a pergola with a deck for a roof, height is 3m from ground. 4.2m wide(along house) by 3.6m deep. Roof will double as a deck for frenchdoors from master bedroom. Questions will I need to use 240 x 45 for the ledger and main beam as well as side supports will I only need single beams not doubles will I need to use the same 240 x 45 for rafters or can I get away with 190 x 45 do I use 600mm centre spacings for rafters will three 90 x 90 posts on stirrups be sufficient for the 4.2m beam will I need knee bracing This is quite a big deck for a master bedroom, 4.2 x 3.6m, I also want to use bolts and brackets for rafters attaching to main beam and ledger, is this too much? Any advice is welcome. Thanks Re: Building a Deck questions 2Oct 21, 2011 3:21 pm First of all, welcome to the home1 forum. Your questions seem a bit confusing. Are you by any chance attaching a pergola to a duble story house and using the pegola as a deck for the 2nd floor and roof for the 1st floor? Re: Building a Deck questions 3Oct 21, 2011 7:22 pm Yes, building pergola against a two storey house.looking at the span tables... At 4.2m wide I should use F7 to 3m away from the house, 1 want to extend out to 3.6m though. I can put another post at 1.8m on one side but not the other as a triple slider opens from the bottom level Re: Building a Deck questions 4Oct 21, 2011 7:36 pm I was planning on running a 240 x 45 (4.2m) ledger dynabolted to bricks of the house. On the other end I was planning 3 x 90x90 posts. Attached to the 3posts a semi rebated 240 x 45 or double 240 x 45. With side rafters also 240 x 45 and internal rafters also 240 x 45 with 240 x 45 nogs to avoid twisting. I also Dont want the rafters ontop of the bearers I want them at the same level as the bearers. Thanks for any advice Re: Building a Deck questions 5Oct 21, 2011 11:00 pm The following are using AS 1684.2 N1/N2 Supp. 2 - 1999 Wind classification N1/N2 - Seasoned softwood - Stress grade F7 Table 49 & 50 - more than 1 m off the ground Bearers: 2/240x45 (double bearer, floor load width up to 4800mm, continuous span, max bearer span 2100mm) Joists: 240x45 (600mm joist spacing, single span, max joist span 3900mm) Posts: 90x90 won't be sufficient, 100x100 & 112x112 are the next sizes up but not specified in the standard. Ledger: No idea. Generally speaking, ledger beams are not recommended because you are attaching your very high and big deck to unknown brickwork. All in all, decks above 800mm require building permits and most likely they will require that you get an engineer to sign everything off. Also, 600mm deck spacing will give you a trampoline. You need to look into balustrades as well. Re: Building a Deck questions 6Oct 22, 2011 11:10 am Thanks Adam I have been looking at a Deck/pergola book. Recommends building as a free standing unit With a 5mm gap to existing house brickwork. I also have to X brace underneath and X brace Between the three posts at the front. I will also use a double beam 240 x 45 Tables also advise me to use 150mm posts to a height of 4.8m (I can trim these down to railing height) Not sure what you mean by trampoline With 600mm rafters! Re: Building a Deck questions 8Oct 22, 2011 8:26 pm Thanks Decided on 450mm spacings. I found plenty of videos showing different building methods and things not to do. I will make a smaller deck as an experiment around 3.8 x 2.6m before I tackle the big one. I want to build a decking to the drawn shape outlined in black. The problem is how close can I build to the gas hot water unit? Will I be able to build around it and be… 0 16179 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Thanks. I was thinking of using either Extreme Joist or LOWDECK timbers for joists. Any idea what sets them apart and which… 2 10584 You should check your detail drawings, it may show downpipe within brick pier. 14 8590 |
