Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Oct 19, 2011 1:39 pm We are getting redesigning our courtyard and there will be some bench seating built into the side of the garden bed. It will be simular to the built in bench in this picture, it will be built into the side of the garden bed and appear to be 'floating'. Underneath the seating will be decking. http://www.gapphotos.com/imagedetails.asp?imageno=221714 Our builder has asked us what height we want the back to be. The actual bench seat will be 450mm from the deck which is standard I think but the back size varies. We would like to obviously lean back but it would be nice to sort of lean back and be able to rest your arms/elbows out on it, (hope this makes sense!) We have measured ourselves sitting in different benches I am just wondering if anyone here has built them in and what size. I can't stand the backs of some benches that seem to end right in the middle of your back making it akward to lean back and we don't want it to end to high either. And yes I'm a perfectionist.. Re: Outdoor Built in Seating - Height Question 2Oct 20, 2011 1:26 am Hi Laila, I've just finished a deck for a client that had a seat around the edge very similar to the one shown. The landscapers had already built the garden bed wall that formed the back of the seat. The seat height was 450mm high and the wall only extended about 180mm (if I remember correctly) above that. Initially I thought it would be to low however after building the seat I was suprised at how comfortable that height was. As you said it meant you could lean back and put your elbows on the top of the wall making a nice perching height. The wall although only being low would be high enough to lean some of those cushion rolls on for back support if required. I made the seat depth 3 boards (420mm) deep which also seemed to be a very comfortable depth. I was so impressed with the way it worked out I'm going to use the dimensions at my own place. I'll get a picture for you when I go back. It should be comfortable for you to sit in, above all else. Re: Outdoor Built in Seating - Height Question 4Oct 21, 2011 11:21 am Quote: And yes I'm a perfectionist.. Then you need to get out the tape with a few seats and boards to find out exactly what seat height, depth and back height/slope works for you and no-one else. Also allow for cushioning in these measurements for the carpenter as some of the timber benches and seats I've sat on at barbies over the years are as hard as hell after ten minutes or so. I'd also consider a sloping back for the seats too. They are just way more comfortable than straight ones.
