Steve That wil be a problem - technically under the Building Code the deck is illegal. Re: My alfresco decking... 29Jan 26, 2008 11:37 pm Yak_Chat Looks nice Matt, great job, but I wonder how the water is going to affect the timbers underneath long term. Steve Treated pine doesnt make a difference?? What else would the bearers be made out of? What effects would I be looking for in the timber? Dukekamaya That wil be a problem - technically under the Building Code the deck is illegal. How - please explain to help me and others down the track? Re: My alfresco decking... 30Jan 27, 2008 7:39 pm The packers underneath - did you seal the cut sides with a H4 preservative? Treated pine seals like an envelope, not a saturation - any time you cut it, it it needs to be resealed.
A timber deck under the building code needs to be a minimum of 300mm above the ground. You also only had joists, no bearers Re: My alfresco decking... 31Feb 25, 2008 5:01 pm Excuse me for joining this thread a bit late.
I will build my deck exactly the same way Matt, it was good to see the pictures of it during construction. A question though - can you see the concrete through the gaps? Duke, I question the requirement for a 300mm clearance above ground level - surely this is only for the post/bearer/joist method of construction built above dirt? In Matts case the concrete, which is already above ground level, acts as the bearers and joists. Maybe it's not really a deck - maybe it's a floating floor with an air gap! Re: My alfresco decking... 32Feb 25, 2008 6:48 pm The ground clearance is a requirement for the decking itself, not bearers or joists - even composite decking has the same requirement. In short the depth of the timber combined with the gap at the top do not allow enough light to penetrate to see the concrete underneath. I like my floating floor too! In short the depth of the timber combined with the gap at the top do not allow enough light to penetrate to see the concrete underneath. OK, thanks for that. I had been advised, believe it or not, to paint my concrete black beforehand. Now I won't bother! Re: My alfresco decking... 35Feb 26, 2008 7:13 pm Quote: OK, thanks for that. Yep and in 2 years time it wil be covered in dust and muck and won't be black anymore anyway Re: My alfresco decking... 36Feb 26, 2008 8:50 pm Eager I had been advised, believe it or not, to paint my concrete black beforehand. Now I won't bother! If it is close to a slab, I would seal the slab with a water-proofing agent to stop damp rising up into the timber Re: My alfresco decking... 37May 26, 2008 10:07 pm Re: My alfresco decking... 38May 26, 2008 10:32 pm Looks really good Matt, well done.
