Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jul 06, 2011 8:19 am Hi all, I'm getting travertine natural stone tiles laid outside in a few weeks. Have organised a tiler and also organised a guy to come in and seal the tiles once they have been laid. He'll be using two coats of DryTreat. I spoke to the tiler last night and he said the sealing has to be done prior to grouting. He said if it's done after grouting there may be a risk the grouting will leave a stain around the joints. I didn't realise this. Is my tiler correct???? Thanks. Re: Sealing before or after grouting??? 6Jul 15, 2011 9:24 am FYI: Sealing before grouting is totally acceptable. The reason the tiler has recommended this is to allow the grout residue to be easily removed. As for the staining reason, never heard of that before. The trick here is to make sure you actually do one coat before grouting and then another coat after grouting. If you do two coats before and none after the grout isn't actually sealed and you definatly want it to be. There is no real right or wrong btw. If you want to grout before sealing you can do. Personal preferance and as shown by this thread can also be lead by the tiler/landscaper. Re: Sealing before or after grouting??? 7Jul 15, 2011 11:00 am Thanks. Just thinking about tiler's reason - maybe he isn't sure that he'd clean all the grout properly around the joints, and then, after sealing the whole lot, he wouldn't be able to clean/touch up those spots ??
