Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Apr 28, 2011 9:42 pm Hello, we are thinking of what to do outside to create a shade when needed... We are thinking about the space outside living room... 1. make veranda's on second floor in order to have shade below? 2. Permanent wooden pergola? 3. Electronic tent, that would be used only when used? 4. Aluminium blinds that would just stick out of the wall - thus not being an exact pergola... We are very skeptical about this now... - Creating veranda outside rooms: You are creating more space, thus more space to clean and i think it migh be unnecessary for upstairs rooms. - Permanent wooden Its nice, but would we feel at a point that is in the middle of an open space? - Electronic tent We haven't searched it yet, but i assume this is the most expensive solution? And also this long term would need to be maintained. - Aluminium blinds Again this might be expensive, but also the most durable? What would you recommend? Re: What do you have outside for making shade? 2Apr 29, 2011 9:03 pm I think you need to provide a picture of each option as I have no idea what you are talking about when you say electronic tent or aluminum blinds outside. It could just be me, but I doubt it. Also a floor plan of your house and the intended area would be good too. Re: What do you have outside for making shade? 4May 02, 2011 9:37 am So by blinds you mean like a Vergola? Think of a horizontal slatted blind, turned to face the sky. The units are motorized and the slats have curved/bent edges to seal and stop water from getting to the ground? Below is a link to Stratco's version called "Outback sun room" http://stratco.com.au/Products/Verandahs_Patios_Carports/Types/Outback_Sunroof/sunroof.asp# Re: What do you have outside for making shade? 6Jun 02, 2011 1:39 pm Be careful when you look for aluminium blind outside as both the Vergola and the Stratco version are both steel. It could be a concern if you live near the coast, and by near, Colorbond reckons 1km or near other corrosive environments which may include swimming pool areas. There are others out there that are completely, Aluminium & stainless steel, including Louvrespan http://www.louvrespan.com.au and I think, Louvretec http://louvretec.co.nz. Also, the cheaper end of the market(steel) generally use electrics that have only a very limited warranty, usually only 12 months, the better systems of motor warranties of up to 5 years. Re: What do you have outside for making shade? 7Oct 19, 2011 2:23 pm We are putting in a roof mounted retractable awning made out of PVC Ferrari waterproof fabric with two galvanised steel poles powdercoat coloured which it retracts out to. We are near the ocean so needed something to withstand salt and coastal winds. We also wanted something water proof for light coastal showers but I wanted to have it retracting for night time when we sit out and look at the sky. It is manually operated by a wench system as I didn't want to have to worry about something mechanical. You may also want to think of your Council and what they allow/what you have to get approval for if neccessary. Thanks mate. Yeah good points!
