Ours are about 1400 apart. So nice and solid Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: Vanderlay's holiday project!! Excellent work with the deck. Just a question regarding the construction as i'm planning my own deck shortly. Did you use a wall ledger to support the joists near the sliding door?? If not what was the distance from the house wall to the first bearer?? Thanks Anthony Re: Vanderlay's holiday project!! (so far).... 32Jan 06, 2008 12:41 pm wanted If not what was the distance from the house wall to the first bearer?? Thanks Anthony Depends on the joist you use - a 90 x 45 F7 has a maximum continuous span of about 1600mm. If you want it further you need to go to a 120 or 140 x 45mm Re: Vanderlay's holiday project!! (so far).... 33Jan 06, 2008 1:48 pm Duke while your into bearers and joist sizing mode.
What size would I require to span 5400mm and only support it at each end. The pool is 4100mm wide if that makes a large difference in size and cost of the bearers, then I could support it at this distance as there are existing posts beside the pool that I can re-use. Either way, one end would be attached to a brick wall and supported at the other end by a post. Also what size posts will I require? I want build a deck over the top of my swimming pool that is now turned into a water tank - hence the large span. Steve Re: Vanderlay's holiday project!! (so far).... 35Jan 06, 2008 5:39 pm What is the whole size of the deck? A bearer's size is dependant on the 'floor load width' and whether single/continuous span etc.
A quick check says 2/290x45 F27 Hardwood or a 390x80 GL8 T/pine beam for a 5.4m span with a load width of 1200mm i.e. 2400mm across to next bearer (joist span) or You could use 2/290x45 F7 treated pine if its only 4.2m - much cheaper. F27 290x45 is about $50/metre and you would need 10.8m Re: Vanderlay's holiday project!! (so far).... 36Jan 07, 2008 9:13 am wanted Hi Vanderlay Excellent work with the deck.
