Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Mar 07, 2011 8:42 pm OUTDOOR TIMBER SCREENING...... I.m looking at DIY Timber screening 68 x 19 merbau timber onto 50x50 Black Aluminium post which will be secured onto a concrete slab with a footing post support. The footings post holders are roughly 300/400 high to support post upright and the post slide ontop of footing that will be dyna bolted to slab. I didnt want to concrete post in ground for other reasons. The timber screen will be 3300 long and 1800 high...... with three post support one each end and one in middle. 3 posts should be enough for my 3300 length? I won't need 4 posts will I?? But wanted to be sure the post supports should be enough to hold post upright once slats are attached. And what screws to use...Stainless steel, Hex/Round not sure, coz it wll be open to the weather environment... I will be staining timber before screwing slats on... or should I wait till there up and on posts before staining?? Another question does the merbau timber come in a length to cover my 3300 screen length?? Re: OUTDOOR TIMBER SCREENING 2Mar 09, 2011 6:08 pm Many questions, ill answer a few of them for you based upon my merbau experience. * I always use stainless steel screws for decking, with a square head (into treated pine frame). Your frame is aluminium so you prob wont be using SS. For my gate, merbau onto gal steel I used Wingtec screws (self-drilling). * I would stain timber after it is all installed and has had a chance to weather for a few months so all the tanin in the merbau runs out * Merbau comes in 1.8,2.1,2.4,2.7,3.0,3.3,3.6 .... etc..... upto 5.7m set lengths. You can ask a timber yard for X amount of 3.3m lengths however you pay more for the service. You will want to trim the ends to square them off so take this into account * 3 posts for 3300 will mean the merbau will be spanning 1650 (distance between posts). I think you may need a 4th post to ensure that the merbau is held in place sufficiently. The boards you buy wont be dead straight either (some will be very bowed) so if you have a large span it will be difficult to get the screening nice and straight. (someone may be able to give you more solid advice on the last bit) Good luck, Re: OUTDOOR TIMBER SCREENING 3Apr 10, 2011 9:04 am This is my complete Timber Screen..... http://img194.imageshack.us/i/iphone013d.jpg/ http://img848.imageshack.us/i/iphone014.jpg/ Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15840 Thanks for letting us know.
