Timber - Eastern Subs Melb

Can anyone suggest a good place to buy timber decking (and bearers/joists etc) in the eastern burbs of melbourne?

Cheers!
There is a Bowens in Croydon on Maroondah Highway near the cheesecake shop, near dorset road apparently.
Tile Importers, Clayton.

Bowens are pretty good.

But also check Bunnings first, sometimes they have stuff cheaper than the timber places. It's just their service that's sh!thouse.

Also check smaller timber places around. My weatherboards were $0.40 cents cheaper from a local timber place than Bowens. 40 cents you say??!...over 1200 metres that's $500 !!
all depends on the timber you want

balau, jarrah, - dandy discount timber
spotted gum, black butt, yellow box- south east timber
etc
all these timbers are in 140mm x 22mm upto 32 mm

dont use red gum - looks great but cups and splits
dont use mahogany, its poor quality at the moment
merabu is a pain in the *** i dont use it

thanks everyone. I think we might be going with treated pine and staining it - we want a BIG deck!
How big?
Probably about 50m2. Will be getting a bit pricey for us in hardwoods.

Based on $3.56 plm, you are prob looking about the $3k mark in merbau if u pay retail price, if you buy it from Ebay (brand new), you can get it for $3 plm, you will save avbout $450. (rough costings)

Do a search on EBAY, and look for a listing by Cassears Timber Products, pricesd at $2.98 plm for 70mm
This place is very good - great selection. It's in Ringwood too

Interesting price list, merbau goes up in price the longer it is. From $3.15 (2.1m) to $4 (5m)
Vanderlay - have a look at the radcon products and think about using them for your deck.

More details here.

Much better use of the volume of timber per tree - and lots of character due to the various shape and sizes etc.

I've seen a deck built with this stuff and it was really nice.

And would make a great place to roast that baa baa

Perhaps because it is a tropical rainforest timber.
Do the world a favour - buy a eucalypt instead. The radially sawn timber is a great idea ... Radcon are doing some great stuff with smaller trees.
Its because its harder to sell a pack of 'shorts' than a pack of 'longs' and you end up with more shorts.
Merbau could be available in lengths well over 6 metres save for the fact it has to be put into 20ft containers to come here - hence you cannot buy a length of merbau in any size longer than 5.7m

haven't heard them on the radio but maybe they are talking about indoor timber flooring as opposed to decking?

Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity.
