Re: my first deck...bearer problems! 3Jan 11, 2011 9:34 am Dollar Do you have posts in the ground in the middle anywhere to support the structure? Also are you meant to have double horizontal slates of various sizes laid near the boarders? thanks Dollar..Yes, we do have the post in the middle..however, the bear is horizontally attached to the post and there's only one.... Re: my first deck...bearer problems! 4Jan 11, 2011 9:39 am Your image is so tiny... the joists appear ok, but you need double the joists for the bearers... Re: my first deck...bearer problems! 6Jan 11, 2011 9:41 am I have no idea about this stuff. Good on you for giving it a go. We are going to do decking for our uncovered area, well DP is going to give it a go. Do you think there is anything wrong with it? I would think you'd need more posts in the ground. How hard has it been so far to do? Getting it level, doing the post stuff? Bearers were 2x 90x45mm = 90x90mm, spaced 1200mm apart. Joists were 90x45mm, spaced 450mm apart. Decking boards 140mm, spaced 5mm apart. So we definitely need double bearers...is it correct to attach the bearer horizontally to the stump ? Or it can only well carry the weight if it's vertical ? Re: my first deck...bearer problems! 13Jan 11, 2011 9:58 am just Erin kb46 Your bearers look to be on their side? ok, this explains my question..it needs to be vertically attached to the stump... not sure how to re do it .... Re: my first deck...bearer problems! 14Jan 11, 2011 10:01 am Looks like you need to remove all the joists, and start again with the bearers. You will need to put two boards upright next to each other for the bearers. Upright, not flat on the stumps like they are now. Sorry I'm bad at giving instructions! Re: my first deck...bearer problems! 15Jan 11, 2011 1:04 pm How big are your post? I dont think they are big enough to hold all that weight. Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: my first deck...bearer problems! 16Jan 11, 2011 1:18 pm Your post/stumps should be coincident with where the bearer and joist connect. Structurally having the post midway between bearers is less than ideal, and yes your bearers need to be flipped. If I'm gonna tell you it's actually something done by "professional" people .. believe it ? I suppose it's done by "professionals" which I don't need to worry about at all... I saw their online profile received good feedback from others as well.... They started the frame yesterday, and when I back to home, I found this issue, which I cannot say 100% wrong, but definitely not in a best or normal way to do it ..... I just talked to their supervisor and pointed out the problems, but he told me they've done many jobs like this... however, finally, he agreed to fix it... What I'm told now is they will be cutting the post about 40 mm and flip the bearer upright .... Re: my first deck...bearer problems! 18Jan 11, 2011 2:03 pm Just make sure the bearers are double up, they need to not only flip it, but add another length for maximum strength. Unbelievable that they think they can get away with charging clients to do a job like this that will encounter problems in no time! Not… 1 8374 I am not a brick expert, but rendering would be 1 option, it would be costly to do the entire house though.... 2 6683 |
