Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Dec 26, 2010 4:40 pm Just laid the merbau deck a week ago. Been looking for some advise on when and what to oil it with. Ive been told to wait 6 weeks and even upto 3 months before oiling it? Should i do this? Also does the deck need to be scrubbed with deck cleaner before oiling it? What is the best oil? water based or oil based? Was also talking to a staff member at one of the major hardware chains and they recommended lanolin oil based oil. (info here http://www.deckdoc.com.au/decking_oil.htm). Cant find any more info on this. Has anyone used this? also how do i remove pencil marks from the boards. I have used metho on a spare board and it works but unsure if its damaging the merbau. Any other advise you guys can give me? Thanks Built The Huntley 290 with HomeXcellance / Cheviot Homes Re: what to use to oil the deck 2Dec 26, 2010 5:37 pm There are a lot of products avaliable for decking, and it really comes down to personal preference. We use Ultradeck and are really happy with it. Water clean-up is a huge bonus if you hate smelly turps, too. Deck cleaner should remove the pencil marks - and if you do it properly, there's no need to wait before applying your chosen finish as the cleaning product will strip excess tannins. I'm sure there are other good products but these are what we use for our decking and merbau screens: http://www.intergrain.com.au/ultradeck.html http://www.intergrain.com.au/reviva.html Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Somewhere I have pics of the screens before and after application of the Ultradeck...I'll try to find them and post them later. Inspired by yours Kek to include the doormat in it's only little drop down area. Very fiddly getting the frame right! We're not going to frame the doormat though, hopefully it'll still work out ok It'll be dropped down... but not framed... We're looking at a water based oil. Have been told all sorts of things about how long to leave it before applying. The first deck went down start of December I think. The second level was finished a week ago. We're planning to apply oil around mid January. The merbau has been bleeding, so we want to make sure it's finished doing what it needs to do first Re: what to use to oil the deck 5Dec 31, 2010 1:08 pm I used Reviva and nappy san mixed together to wash the deck yesterday arvo. All pencil marls came off. The boards were lighter along the screw lines as this is where I scrubbed bit harder to remove the pencil marks. Did the first coat this morning using Feast Watson Decking Stain in the Merbau colour. It has had some very good reviews on woodwork forums and $35 cheaper then ultra deck. Looking in my shed I found I had an open 10litre tin of Ultra deck which i used last yr to stain my merbau fence and gates. I used this tin to apply a coat of stain to the gates and fence. It has been over 12 minths since they were stained. They have come up a treat. I didnt wash them, just cleaned the spider webs off them. The FW stain is more of a browner colour and thicker then then UD. Both are Merbau coloured. Will do another coat in the next couple of days. Too hot to do another coat now. Re: what to use to oil the deck 8Jan 07, 2011 5:46 pm Not our choice.... but we use Sikkens on our merbau fence. The guy who built it for us did the first coat and apparently (According to the folks at bunnings) its the only brand you cant switch between so we are stuck with it ?? And it requires 3 coats, the first a base coat and then another 2 coats of a water based oil stuff. Does look the biz when finished though ! I'm about to put down some Merbau. Is it necessary to oil underneath the boards before laying? 0 1930 Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck?
