The Alfresco Story hmmmm? Last week we decided to have a go at decking the alfresco ourselves. This was another first for me as I have not done anything like this previously (besides the gate etc on the sides of my house). Again I hit the net and did some research into what materials were best and what sizes of material work best for the size of the area that I wanted to cover. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I elected for some treated pine 140x45mm and 140mm merbau boards. The area is 4.5 metres wide and 5 metres deep and I needed to lift it up off the concrete pad to a height of 165mm to be the same height as the bottom of the bifold door. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The frame was put together and dynobolted to the wall. I also decided to put 20mm of fall to allow any water / rain to run off rather than possibly pooling up on the boards. We elected to go with "set length" boards for 2 reasons. 1) There would be no joins... 2) It would be easier to make this look professional... Set length boards simply means that all the boards are cut off at the end and that there is no joins on the decked area. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ After all the boards are fixed down with the batten screws it was simply just a matter of trimming all the boards off at the end. Simple right.... With all the materials (Wood, screws, stain and dynobolts etc) the total cost was just under $2000. It took around 8 hours and 1 skinned knuckle to complete. We had a few quotes on this project and they were all between $4000 and $5000. Re: My alfresco decking... 2Jan 22, 2008 9:21 pm You know where I live Matt....
I promise I'll give you a hand. You just bring the tools & lay the deck & I'll cook the bbq Seriously though. It looks fantastic. You've done a great job. You should feel proud every time you step out there. I think you've made my mind up about what to do in our Alfresco area. Mike. That looks great! Well done. Love the colour of the stain as well! Looks much better than cement! Did that die somewhere, and Alfresco took its place!
I have another version of “Alfresco”, but I won’t bother you all with that! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: My alfresco decking... 7Jan 22, 2008 9:29 pm Nice job Matt, so where is the pic. of the skinned knuckle????

Re: My alfresco decking... 13Jan 23, 2008 4:18 pm That looks amazing. I would love something like that around our spa pool. Re: My alfresco decking... 15Jan 23, 2008 5:12 pm wow that looks amazing Matt - the whole place is just beautiful!
I wish we could have timber decking on our alfresco but we are Level 1 on the Fire assessment (could be worse, the blocks down the hill hit Level 2 and I think even Level 3 (as they are further into the gully )which is even more restrictive) so from what I have read there will be no timber against the house for us - it will be tiled or concrete.... I'll just live vicariously through you all with your lovely timber decks! Fiona Re: My alfresco decking... 17Jan 23, 2008 5:50 pm Keewee Swan,
Thanks...make it a project weekend! It really is very easy. If I can do it anyone can nzfiona, I look forward to our conferring... Talinsmum, Thanks Fiona! It is starting to feel like a home and less like a house if that makes sense... Don’t mind me I came in at the end of the conversation! I had to have my BBQ awning past by the fire guys, METAL!!! I’m in a high fire zone. Quite truthfully, I didn’t know how they would rate it! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 13480 Use a product like Equisol's Vitalise to clean the deck then coat with a penetrating timber oil. It will look 10 years younger and add value to your home.
