Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Nov 29, 2010 9:06 am Ok, well we were planning on getting our deck built this upcoming weekend...but a builder friend of mine has strongly urged me to get tiles instead. He gave me a few reasons: 1. We wanted the deck to be 14cm above ground level, but he felt this would make the area too small (from a height perspective) 2. Fixing over concrete, Modwood must have 6mm gaps - all kinds of stuff will make the way under the deck including food (barbecues etc.) 3. Very difficult to check for termite trails and check termite barrier 4. Dogs may 'relieve' themselves under the deck - bad smells etc. 5. Potential breeding ground for spiders/snakes So...we are now going for tiles lol. Decking was going to cost us around $5000 for a 36 squared metre area...so should be able to save alot of $$ as well. What tiles do people recommend? Natural Stone (ie. Travertine, Granite etc)? Even though the decking was going to cost 5K we want to keep the tiles as cheap as possible. Cheers Re: Outdoor Tiles 2Nov 29, 2010 11:16 am Hey - we're tiling with large format limestone (800x400) from Amber - about $100/m2 to purchase then about $40-65/m2 to lay. It's only cheaper if you go for ceramic outdoor tiles - in my mind, they never look as nice as real stone, however the cost is prohibitive. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Outdoor Tiles 3Nov 29, 2010 11:28 am What is Travertine Polished Porcelain? I thought Travertine was Natural Stone? Anyone recommend these (see link below)? Top Tiles currently have a sale and nothing is over $25/square meter. http://www.toptiles.com.au/index.php?pa ... &Itemid=90 Re: Outdoor Tiles 4Nov 29, 2010 12:37 pm We were going to have a low deck but found some standards that said we needed a 300mm clearance for air circulation and pest inspections. Now going with slab and tiles. Found the bigger tiles are more expensive. Found tiles we liked nowhere near $25 for a 600x600mm tile. Re: Outdoor Tiles 5Nov 29, 2010 2:54 pm Travertine is natural stone - not porcelain. It might be a porcelain tile manufactured to give a travertine look. Besides - you won't want polished for an outdoor area - it would be extremely slippery. You could always give it a non-slip coating but then that would affect the look of the tile. You'll need to look for specific outdoor tiles - they'll have a bit more of a rough surface to provide grip when wet. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Outdoor Tiles 8Dec 09, 2010 3:32 pm In the end we have gone with a nice looking external ceramic tile (dark grey in colour). Has a slip rating of 12 and is 400mmx400mm. Getting it at a good price of only $25 per square metre. Don't really know much more about it than that.
