Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Oct 07, 2010 8:16 pm Just wondering whether anyone can give me some advice on what I should do with my Alfresco floor. There is a step down from the house to the Alfresco. Originally we were going to lay tiles as they are more practicle but if we laid a deck at the same level of the house floor we would have a nice indoor/outdoor area. We received a quote for a deck which came back at $165 a sq metre so all up around 4k. This is stretching our budget so tiles would be better cost wise. If you have a look at my post, I have some pictures up. But Austral has come out with new ceramic pavers. They look fantastic and only $85 per sqm2. They are gorgeous have a look at my thread Re: Alfresco Flooring Ideas 5Oct 07, 2010 10:23 pm Re: Alfresco Flooring Ideas 7Oct 08, 2010 9:10 am Average price 610x610 unfilled travertine with external 'r' slip rating is $90 sq may be worth looking at if your material budget is there abouts. Most of the paving i do is with Travertine. Its suitable around pools, although you will get quite a few opinions that say it isnt due to slipping issues. Unfilled Trav. is fine for pool areas. Granite 500x500 in 'flamed' finish is only $45 sq mtr retail in vic granite 800x400 is around $48 retail in vic. Natural stone generally works out cheaper than a top quality man made tile , paver. If you choose natural stone make sure the adhesive that is used is 'white' not grey as you will get colour bleed through the stone i use Mapaei Kerra-bond Plus with isolastic. Best adhesive available other than Optima. If installing with mortar only use a cream or white cement with white washed sand and white brick sand, not yellow/orange brick sand with either lanotek or latex bonding agent mixed in mortar mix. $165 sq for deck is a good price. To put it in context i would be around $220 sq mtr to install travertine on an existing concrete base any quality tiller / paver is around $80 - $120 sq mtr for labour app. $15 sq mtr to grout and then cost of tile / stone these figures are a guide only Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: Alfresco Flooring Ideas 8Oct 08, 2010 10:45 am Thanks for the info davinci. Quick question - I'm not a big fan of the look of 'unfilled' travertine. I much prefer it filled. If I went filled travertine, does this add to the cost (ie. more than $80 per sq metre)? Also, can the slip resistance still be 'R'. Thanks! Re: Alfresco Flooring Ideas 9Oct 10, 2010 7:21 am Re: Alfresco Flooring Ideas 10Oct 10, 2010 6:06 pm Thanks very much for the replies. Decking looks nice but am leaning toward tiles or pavers as they may be more practicle. We will have our Barbie at the end of the Alfesco plus the dog will exit/enter the house this way. Only thing is I like the idea of having the Alfresco area at the same level as the house. ATM there is a 17 cm drop from the house. This can be easily achieved with decking but wondering what can be done to achieve this with Tiles or Pavers? Anyone have any ideas? Re: Alfresco Flooring Ideas 11Oct 15, 2010 7:48 pm Just wondering whether anyone can comment on this possibility. If we laid pavers that were say 5cm in depth and spread sand say 5 or 6cm in depth we would only have a drop of around 6cm from the house to the Alfresco. Is this possible? You can't cover the weepholes or the dampcourse in your brickwork, so you're going to be restricted by that. We wanted decking, partly to achieve a surface level with the floors, but it was way too expensive. So we switched to pavers and we have a stepdown equal to about one brick - it's not a drama. Re: Alfresco Flooring Ideas 13Nov 08, 2010 2:48 pm Spotted this thread and just wanted to say we went through the same dilemma regarding the step down into alfresco area. We were restricted by the inspection holes so have about a brick step, but it's really no problem unless you are seriously drunk and carrying a tray full of bbq stuff! We went for filled travertine, 600mmx600mm and it's come up great. Cost $70/m2 to buy and $60/m2 to lay. Our area is 26m2. Now it's time for the landscaping http://jacksonsbuild.blogspot.com Re: Alfresco Flooring Ideas 14Nov 16, 2010 1:49 pm Hi, another suggestion is limestone pavers 400 x 400. We also used a pebble feature paver aswell just to break up the area.
The limestone pavers are very cool underfoot and come in a great range of colours. We have used them throughout our yard, both backyard for alfresco and othe paving, plus front yard by the pool aswell as our driveway, and we used a darker colour paver to feature a pattern in the middle. They cost around $36 a square metre, plus sealing, plus laying. Here are a few pics of our alfresco. We too had the step up, but this isn't a problem and doen't bother us at all. Re: Alfresco Flooring Ideas 15Nov 16, 2010 4:54 pm They are all so gorgeous!! BTW, it seems quite normal to have the step (and we have it too), so don't worry about it!
