Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Sep 30, 2010 8:26 am Hi, Come November, we'll be installing a new fibreglass pool, which will run adjacent with our outdoor entertainment area. Currently, this area is concrete and is level with the grass where the pool will go. We have made the decision to upgrade from concrete and have decided on Modwood (Wood Plastic Composite Decking). When using this over concrete, a structure (we'll most likely use Treated Pine) must first be attached to the concrete and MUST be at least 50mm in height to aid in ventilation etc. This is all well and good...but this means that the outdoor entertainment area will now be higher than the backyard (somewhere between 5 and 10 centimetres higher). When the new pool goes in, this means people would now have to 'step down' into the pool area. We're also getting glass fencing which will be on the adjoining line between pool area and Modwood decking. We were planning on the pool gate opening outwards (towards the decking) but the gate would hit the decking and wouldn't open. Someone told me on another thread that this was no problem as we could adjust the level when the pool went in. How does this work? How would you make the pool area the same height as the Modwood??? This may be a silly question but I have zero clue when it comes to stuff like this. Remember, we haven't done ANYTHING yet so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. If people think we should just pass on the Modwood we'll probably tile our concrete instead. That way I know it'll definitely be level with the pool area (which will most likely be travertine tiles). Feedback please welcome!!! Re: Adjusting Level 2Sep 30, 2010 10:03 am Interesting question. I am interested in the answer as well Agent_009. Hopefully someone with some knowledge will respond soon. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Adjusting Level 3Sep 30, 2010 10:07 am You would just increase fill to the area. Eg our place is a 1 in 100 flood zone. Our home had to be 30cm higher then the ground level. That then meant that our timber deck off the back of the house was also at this higher level. We also had to ensure the pool (concrete in our case) was also at this higher level (beam). So when they dug the hole for the framework the soil was dumped to then be smoothed around the edge and increase the level of the ground. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Adjusting Level 4Sep 30, 2010 1:28 pm Thanks for the info! Wow! It's that simple - just spreading soil. I wonder if I have enough soil from the pool excavation to cover this. Hmmm...had my heart set on Modwood but now I'm thinking it's going to be easier to just tile slab. Re: Adjusting Level 5Sep 30, 2010 5:05 pm The pool company can use the deck height as there finish height datum. They would have to take into account the finish height of the finish surface around the pool as well as drainage (which way the finish surface will fall) ie: if your coper paver is 40mm thick and it is installed on a 4mm bed of adhesive then the 'in theory' finish height of pool beam / shell would be 44 mm below top of deck height. This dosnt take into account the require surface fall for drainage. The cut height of the site would need to take into account of the elements that go into your finished surface. If it is to ba paved then as an example the crushed rock would be 50mm the concrete would be 80mm the adhesive would be 4mm and the paver would be 40mm so your cut height or soil height around pool would need to be app. 134mm below deck height this also dosnt take into account fall for drainage. Confused? thats why landscapers were invented, maybe get an hrly rate consult if your doing diy. Ok, well I feel a bit better now. I'll get Leisure Pools to make the pool the same height as the deck and will also consult a landscaper in order for things to go smoothly. We were considering decking around the pool as well but feel there would be 'too' much decking...so leaning towards a natural stone tile instead (travertine or granite etc.) Thanks sooo much. isn't a garage level with the rest of the house a given? pretty sure they 'came around' long time ago. if you have a flat block, the garage is usually level with the rest… 1 17511 they can, it's a fairly standard solution when the slab isn't recessed. the falls need to be in the main floor, if it hasn't been done then you need to ask them to redo… 4 6579 interesting situation what happened after builder issued final invoice? did you list as defect or not does the building surveyor have any responsibility? ie. issuing… 13 46866 |
