I find them really cold and I can't stand the gritty sound when there's a miniscule grain of dirt/sand and it gets walked on (similar to finger nails down a blackboard!!) We have timber floors, so the natural option for us was to have timber decking in the alfresco. We've had it down for about 5 months, and still haven't had a chance to oil it (weekends are either raining or busy), but the tanins are still leaching out and it's well protected under the roof. I have lived with old red brick pavers (which were fabulous until the weeds grew in the sand joins), and sandstone pavers, which would be my second choice after decking, but not tiles! Grit and tiles don't make me a happy person! Good to be different, though. If we were all the same our homes would be soooo boring!!! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! I think we've changed our minds a thousand times now. We currently have a concrete slab and want to turn it more into an Alfresco type area and give it the indoor/outdoor flowing look. We have shiny, white tiles inside so were considering the same tiles for outside. Although white may be a bad idea? We also have a normal glass sliding door that leads to the Alfresco area - I'm guessing if we went with decking we could make it level with indoors. Not sure if this would be possible with tiling? Also, we're possibly considering upgrading the glass sliding door with bi-fold doors...I've always thought decking compliments a bi-fold door better. But alot of people I've spoken to seem to think tiles would compliment bi-fold door better - what do people think. Re: Tiled or Deck for Alfresco 24Sep 13, 2010 11:21 am If you have a dog or cat, DO NOT go white tiles. We are getting bi-folds and will be definitly going timber decking but I think tiles can look just as impressive it just depends on what look your going for. eg if your going timer bi-folds or aluminuim. I love the look of timber far more than tiles. IMO they seem more warm and inviting. We have two dogs so I think I'll stay away from white tiles. Although I would have liked the tiles to match those of the ones inside The more I think about it the more I'm convinced I'll go with tiles...just really struggling with a colour. Re: Tiled or Deck for Alfresco 26Sep 13, 2010 11:57 am Yeah we have white tiles and 2 dogs and it is impossible to keep clean. I think if your are going timber bifolds then you should timber decking but that just MO. If you are set on tiles then what is the colour of the outside walls on your house? Can you upload a pic? Haven't got a pic at the moment sorry. Our outside walls are brick. Have white tiles in inside that lead to a sliding glass door. You need to step down when walking outside this door to walk onto what is currently a concrete slab. We may keep the glass sliding doors or may change to bi-folds...haven't decided yet. But again it also depends on what outdoor furniture you have as well. I think it's great to incorporate both if possible. Our alfresco has been enclosed, sort of an outdoor, indoor room which we have tiled, as there is no step down. We would like to add a decking leading off this area. http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad92/barbs68/fit%20out/house315.jpg Re: Tiled or Deck for Alfresco 33Jan 16, 2011 10:21 pm Hi everyone, it was great to read all your thoughts and opinions about this. Our Alfresco is upstairs and we don't know which way to go although are leaning towards the tiling. I think whilst the timber decking provides more of an outdoor feel which is what I like, though IMO the cost added to the ongoing maintenance doesn't balance out. Given the cost of ours falls into the squarage cost of the building, it may not make a difference thought we have to check this with the builder (have not signed anything as yet). Does anyone know if waterproofing and tiling will exceed the cost of decking? Re: Tiled or Deck for Alfresco 34Feb 09, 2011 1:52 pm Have you seen these products? I think it’s a mixture of plastic and timber. http://www.modwood.com.au/default.asp?menuid=81 or http://www.decker.com.au/different_types_of_decking.php It may save you on the maintenance issue of re oiling a timber deck? I may use it on our build, for both alfresco and outdoor areas, maybe even in place of paving across the front of the house. On the surface it looks like something worth considering though I haven't looked into it. I'm also not sure if it's suitable for a building/area with a fire rating.
