Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jul 24, 2010 10:21 am We want to put in a fairly large pergola on the western side of our house but since we don't want to block out the beautiful winter sunshine, ideally would like one of those opening systems. Does anyone have one? Pros and cons? Hubby thinks we should just get laserlite but I'm keen on the roof opening systems. Re: Anyone have a roof opening pergola? 2Jul 24, 2010 12:55 pm We completed our patio last year and our one major goal was making sure we minimised the loss of winter sunshine that streams in through our french doors. We achieved this by making the roof slope back towards the house and fitting a box gutter with a couple of extra down pipes on that side to help with the increased waterflow. It was worked really well and we are quite happy with it. Some old pics of it can be found on this thread; My Patio build thread The one thing I'd change about ours is possibly extending the patio towards the fence a little further. We will need to look at some sort of patio blinds to stop rain getting in at the moment. That is a small price to pay for being able to sit out in the covered area with the sunshine streaming in though. Re: Anyone have a roof opening pergola? 3Jul 28, 2010 4:11 pm Thanks cmooring, your pergola looks great but don't think it would look right at our place. Would love a "vergola" but it would be a bit too pricey for us - don't know how good the vergola "knock-offs" are. Re: Anyone have a roof opening pergola? 4Jul 29, 2010 3:04 pm Hi inthewoods We have been looking into Vergolas as well and have decided against one mostly because of the cost. We found the rip off ones were not much cheaper than the real deal. We also considered totally covering with laserlight but our builder strongly advised against it as it would get too hot underneath on a sunny day. Therefore, we are going for colourbond but with the option to put in a few laserlight panels if we want more light. We will also probably line the roof with timber and put in some lights. I hope it works - we have agonised over this design for a long time. Good luck with yours and let us know what you decide. albi Is there a building permit? RU in Victoria?
