Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jun 22, 2010 8:53 pm Hey Guys, My partner and I are currently designing a new deck for our very bland back yard. We're wanting a very grand style, flyover type roof covering a very basic stained deck. I've spent the weekend learning and playing around in Google Sketchup and came up with the following design Aside from the fact i'll need some uprights on the side for the roof, can anyone see any issues I may face / feedback on my design? Size is 6m from house, 7 m long Thanks http://img409.imageshack.us/i/35700431444943972567183.jpg/ http://img690.imageshack.us/i/35700431444928972567183.jpg/ http://img138.imageshack.us/i/houserooffinal3.jpg/ http://img696.imageshack.us/i/houserooffinal5.jpg/ Re: My new deck design 2Jun 22, 2010 9:48 pm You would need to excavate quite a bit of soil to put a deck down properly. There is then issues with drainage etc. Decks are required to have a 300mm clearance from the underside of the deck to the ground underneath. I saw a deck recently done on a similar house/size. The ground was dug out approx 300mm, they used steel bearers and joists with Modwood decking we supplied. It looked VERY good Re: My new deck design 3Jul 25, 2010 11:09 pm Dukekamaya Decks are required to have a 300mm clearance from the underside of the deck to the ground underneath. Duke, I have heard varying depths about deck clearance thrown around. Do you know where in a standard / code this is stated cause i have never been able to find one? Thanks meeting with the architects this week to get the plans going Re: My new deck design 9Jul 27, 2010 10:39 am d@n Is there a gap between the two roofs to allow rain water to run off the decked roof? There is... my pic doesnt go into too much detail with some of the finer details We plan to have a gutter on the back to collect and then divert back to the main roof - to avoid water going "uphill" and into the house through the tiles Re: My new deck design 10Jul 31, 2010 11:22 pm Your patio design is quite similar to ours. Check out my patio thread to see some pics of how it turned out. We just ended up using steel only for ours. We preferred to have the patio roof to slope back towards the house to allow for maximum sunlight penetration during winter. The only change I would make to our design would be to extend the patio roof a little bit further to give greater coverage from the rain. I like your design. I reckon it'll be great! I think they used Google Sketchup. That appears to be what they mention in the initial post. We've used it for some basic modelling too, and after watching a few brief tutorials, it is pretty easy to get something up realtively quickly.
