Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 May 25, 2010 2:20 am I'm thinking of getting this: any opinions out there from people who've got it? Re: decking made of recycled plastic? 2May 25, 2010 7:59 am I have friends who have it, personally I dont like it but they love it. And believe me, it doesn't look like wood and you wont fool anyone that it is wood. And lastly my mates deck sits partially in the sun and it get VERY hot - unwalkable in bare feet hot in summer. If your deck sits unprotected then I wouldn't use it. On the upside it is a "greener" choice and there is virtually no maintenance. Re: decking made of recycled plastic? 3May 25, 2010 8:56 am My parents have used plastic decking. Theirs is not designed to look like wood (It is white) however it is maintenance free. You only ever need to wash it very occasionally. The downside is that is can be noisy. It creaks and squeaks a lot under foot, especially in winter. Was much easier to put down then timber as it's straight! The colours then were very limited but it was a fantastic product to work with. It didn't creak, nor did it get overly hot in summer (Melb mind you) and faded to the display colour sample we were given. Screw thread nails ensured it has remained in place to this day without one of them coming up. Best part is you can put the side everyone wants to put up but can't with real wood (the side with all the little grooves). We have since moved and just waiting for our house to be completed where I fully intend to do it all over again. It's an individuals choice but I think I represent one of the 89% of men who really can't be 'S@#**+D' having to maintain their decking every 12 - 18mths..lol. Kind of like synthetic grass, it grows on you. Oh wait, synth grass doesn't grow does it. I maintain my hardwood deck with oil every 9 months, and it is a pain! Re: decking made of recycled plastic? 7May 27, 2010 8:11 pm Yeah..I must say I'm looking forward to not having to maintain the plastic deck. A hose or a sweep here and there is bearable Much easier to work with than real timber...no splinters. It's quite heavy...but I did use the 137mm boards and went with the kleva klip fasteners. We did build a big timber deck 5 years ago and it was a big job to maintain it...to wash it down properly and reoil every 6 months was a big job ... and then being careful not to walk oil through the house that hadn't finished soaking in. It's fooled quite a lot of tradies who think it's timber. I'm loving it so far. This w'end we'll lay the back deck...70ish square meters of the stuff. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 10970 Building Standards; Getting It Right!
