Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 May 11, 2010 10:23 pm Hi guys, I’m planning on what to do for my alfresco area. Would love some feedback and ideas, some pros and cons on the options or even some pics would be great. I have a few options, but not sure which would be more practical, I’m sure the cost would be very different from each option listed below, but I have to take inconsideration I’ll be having kids in a few years time so it will have to be kinda child friendly area and I also have an easement running across my backyard. From the end of the Alfresco to the back fence is 3.3m and to the side fence 4.5m, we are also a corner block. Option 1 Decking, I can make it flush with the floor height inside and extend it all the way to the back fence and side fence making a grand entertain area. This would mean also less landscaping to make to ground level. Option 2 Pavers, I would have a small step down from the Bi sliding door, and I could pave the whole area and it would be at ground level. This would mean landscaping to make the ground level. Option 3 Tiling, Slab the alfresco area only flush with inside and extended the tiling through to the alfresco area, then I would have to either paver or grass the rest of the backyard. Or any other options?? I have pictures in my blog of my alfresco area if you want to get an idea of my backyard. We decided against this due to this reason. We are going with a tiled alfresco area with a drop down and a deck sitting just off it. It will be a two toned effect - seen it on a display house and it looked good Re: Alfresco ideas 4May 18, 2010 7:01 am Lunchtime becareful with option 1, you dont want the wood to cover your weep holes or your house will not be safe from termites. We decided against this due to this reason. We are going with a tiled alfresco area with a drop down and a deck sitting just off it. It will be a two toned effect - seen it on a display house and it looked good Hi lunchtime I personally liked option 1, but not the annual maintenance. Thanks for that information, as I never thought of that. I did do some research on the net about weep holes and decking after reading your post. I knew weep holes were for moisture but didn’t think about termites. I was reading an Australian building regulation and it stated not to cover weep holes. A few common problems which people do is build garden beds up against the brickwork and covering weep holes and also people building decking over weep holes. I also read that it would be fine to cover weep holes in a roofed alfresco area or an area which won’t get wet and that’s not a problem. But I think it’s still a risk your taking knowing that you can expose yourself to termites even if you have termite protection. As prevention could be the only solution to having a termite problem down the road. The option you’re going for sound interesting, do you have a picture or a web link to the picture. Personally i would be more concerned with the maintenance issue, especially if exposed to the weather.
