Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Apr 13, 2010 9:56 am We currently have a deck 8m long by 3m wide - attached to the house on the long side. At the outer edge the deck is 1.5m off the ground We have now discovered that this is not wide enough to comfortably sit around a table on as the deck also provides access to the outside area. We would dearly like to extend the size of the deck by about 1.5m to make it 8x4.5m, then place a roof over. Currently there is a pergola over attached to the fascia of the house. Are their any special things we need to consider? Anyone with advice would be greatly apprecaited. I am a regular reader and first time poster. Cheers Simon Re: Extendinga Deck 2May 03, 2010 3:46 pm The only thing I can think of would be to make sure that the ballustrading is secure if you extend. I am assuming that the block slopes away from the house so depending on the degree then the height of the ballustrading could get to 2000mm off the ground. As far as Posts go just linr them up with existing and also if the bearers run horizontal to house (Which would be easier) you can then just keep them the same and just slide the joist right up next to existing ones and then use them to fasten the decking onto. This however will make the screws/nails offline to existing. Another way would be to affix a leger onto outside of deck and then use joist hangers I've just built 3 stairs off a landing out the back and been told by the private certifier I need hand rails sorry tried to attach a pic but couldn't mine don't have sides… 5 5800 So I'm just reading up on this ecosystem of lights.
