Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Apr 11, 2010 9:02 pm Hi all, I am currently looking at having a pergola built in Canberra which I need done fairly soon and have been trying (and I say trying as no one seems to want the job) to get quotes for the area. I have so far had a quote for a timber pergola at 3.2m x 4.2m with grey laserlight and pitched slightly. Quote was $4000. I have also had a quote for an installed 'steel' frame pergola with a flat, steel roof and sky lights at 2.8m x 4.2m (as this would be attached from the gutter). Quote was $3029. Being a female, I kept getting quotes above $8000, so this seems way better, but I still don't think these prices are quiet right. Any advice? Thanks heaps!!! Vanessa. Re: Advice needed about Pergola.... Am I being ripped off? 2Apr 11, 2010 9:59 pm if it helps, we paid about $4,500 for our pergola, that included slight angled roof (as opposed to a pitched roof which was more expensive). Laserlite top, timber frame, incl drainage around and all permits required. I might add, I found it hard to get someone to do it with permits, most blokes aren't interested in complicated work, and they weren't much cheaper. The size was about 4x6m... hope that helps you! Am I being ripped off? 3Apr 11, 2010 10:10 pm They all seem pretty right. The quality of what you can get with a patio can vary a heap. The smaller touches and finishes will really make a difference to the look. If function is all you are concerned about then the cheaper quotes are about right. Timber will have more work and material as well as more fixings. Steel is quick and easy and stronger with less parts. I prefer timber. Oh and the outlaws chose the grey polycarbonate for theirs and wish they now went with white as the light isn't quite what they had expected. Re: Advice needed about Pergola.... Am I being ripped off? 4Apr 11, 2010 10:12 pm Thank you for that! I meant slight angled as well, not pitched... the lingo here is not my strong point! Mine wouldn't have approvals (not needed so long as under 3m high, and the size I'm after) no drainage really either, just drains running into the garden bed. I know what you mean too though about ppl wanting to do permits! And thanks, that is a help. Am I being ripped off? 5Apr 11, 2010 10:13 pm I love the look and sound of water running off a roof in the rain Re: Advice needed about Pergola.... Am I being ripped off? 6Apr 11, 2010 10:16 pm Fu, as usual, thank you! I was only going for grey to blend with my tiles, but originally wanted pearl or clear. Guy convinced me on the grey. Good to know about the light! Its an important factor for me with a small amount of windows brining in all my lounge/kitchen light which would be affected by the pergola. I agree timber looks better, but functionality is definitely key! Oh, and enhancing the sound of rain, also awesome! I agree again Fu! So I suppose its to the drawing board for which way to go! Thanks again all!
