Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Apr 01, 2010 12:34 pm Hi all, Well my deck is ready for it's first restaining after the initial coat of Sikkens Cettol HLS several months ago. I'm just wondering if the general consensus is to give the deck a wash with something like Intergrain Reviva before restaining, or would you just ensure that the deck is clean and dry (very difficult on that last part in Melbourne lately!)? Cheers, al Re: Decking question - Wash deck before restaining? 2Apr 01, 2010 12:45 pm I highly recommend Reviva - awesome stuff! Personally, if it's only lasted a few months, I'd also ditch the Sikkens and use Intergrain's Ultradeck - our front porch lasted almost 12 months before it needed redoing. It also doesn't stink, unlike a lot of products, and washes up in water. This is merbau, before and after a going-over with both Reviva and Ultradeck: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Decking question - Wash deck before restaining? 3May 10, 2010 1:23 pm I know this may be a little late...but maybe for someone else looking for an answer. To stain or oil your merbau will need to remove the tanin in the timber. In order to do this cheaply go down to coles and buy the homebrand napisan. Put some in a bucket of water and use a hard bristled brush and give it a good scrub. Leave it for about 5 mins, and then hose off with a pressure washer or just a hose. You will see how much colour comes out and your deck will be very pale and grey. Let it dry and then hit it with a few coats of oil. use a sheep skin cloth applicator. Be very generous with the oil as removing the tanin will make the timber nice and dry and will soak up the oil well which will protect for a long time to come. I personally like using Feast and Watson. One of the best on the market but its not cheap. Cheers +1.. have used napisan many times int he past... works well! from memory, the active ingredient is oxalic acid .. the same ingredient is used in "Reviva", but is 1/4 of the price (in coles napisan brand) Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room. There is a hallway/entry that is never used, so was thinking this could be an option. Only… 0 4697 2 577 Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 10970 |
