Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Mar 30, 2010 9:28 am Hi guys, We were starting to plan our backyard and step one was going to be to raise our boundary fences for 2.25m from the 1.8 standard colorbond fence. After talking to the council I was pointed to this helpful website (http://www.whittleseabuilding.com.au/ou ... fences.asp) where it says that anything over 2m requires a building permit, ughhh isn't it always the way. I'd seen a thread from Mattwalker ages ago where he put up the lattice extension on his colorbond fence with no problems, but the lattice works not really my thing I was thinking a timber extension to match our backyard theme. So I was thinking maybe a feature wall.... the length of the current fence.. would not be classed as a fence and such would mean we could go to our desired height and not require a permit, and we get the added bonus of hiding the (IMO) hidious colorbond with something nicer say rendered board or something of the like. Think it could work? In theory this timber wall I'm proposing could just be a hedge... and that would be fine I'm sure. Has anyone got any creative extensions to their fences to share? I will continue to train. tap tap tap. Nice pic btw. Re: Raising height of boundary fences 5Mar 30, 2010 7:28 pm That's exactly what we want to do... we are getting our colorbond fence free from the developers but its (imo) an ugly green that will just not go with any aspect of our house! (But hey... it's a free fence!) So hiding the fence is not then considered a fence and then you wouldn't need a permit??? OR is this just your particular council?? We were thinking of building our BBQ/Outdoor kitchen into this feature wall... do you think that would need a permit too?? Love both of those fences/walls too!!! Sleven Moved into our Atlantique MkII 36 by Carlisle Homes Re: Raising height of boundary fences 6Mar 31, 2010 8:56 am I did some more calling about and yes.. anything that is over 2m high will require a permit, wall, fence, so long as its a structure it will require a permit. To take that to the nth letter of the law I'd have to find out from where is that measured? My neighbours have had a deeper cut on their block than mine so they sit lower, so I'd guess that the fence is just about 2m on their side already where on my side it's about 1.6 Im sure I could push 20cm of fill into the areas around the fence, thinking soil and garden bed should give me close to the 20cm I'd need. If I did that the new measure would be 2m on the nose on my side... too sneeky? Re: Raising height of boundary fences 7Mar 31, 2010 8:59 am I should add its not about ******* off the neighbors, they have no problems with it, more down the road if they sell and the new people have a problem with it I don't want to get bitten, plus new estates are full of people who love to complain, so might pay to be on the right side of the law for this one. I had one of my neighbors from over the road in my backyard the other day showing him around and he looked over my back fence to about 5 houses up and saw something he didn't like in their backyard and stood there trying to work out which house it was so he could put in a complaint... get a life! Obviously must be bored with his life! Hi all, Our boundary perimeter fences need replacing (3 sides). From everyone's experience, what would you install? Timber lapped and capped OR colorbond? Thank you. 0 2862 thanks Chippy, i hope they have applied sealer but i am doubt to be honest, so i am gonna do this job after handover. 8 16226 You should be able to encase the sewer but you will need it designed and approved and access to lot 580 to do the work 2 17138 |
