Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jan 29, 2010 1:39 pm Hi.Cant find an answer to this elsewhere.I wish to put a roof over a new deck attached to the north west side of my brick veneer house.Deck size will be 8m along the wall and 4m out.The house is roof is a hip roof.I had quotes from various pergola companies to do a flat/gable/flat roof open at one side and polycarb flashing to the existing gutter at the house on the other side.I had concerns of heat transfer as the roof would only be 2.2m high (the flats).Anyhow quotes of $14,000 sent me back to my builder. He could do a full lined gabled roof using scissor trusses but because of weight and wind loading engineering issues would mean a $18,000 job - eek!!!.So he suggested a flat 'floating roof',that he had built a number of, ie brackets thru the roof tiles supporting one side above the house roof a metre or so back from the guttering and pitched up at the outside edge to make it appear light and contemporary. This structure would be timber and colorbond unlined and cost app. $5000.My question is.1- if the finished colorbond height were to be maybe 2.4 or 2.5 m above the deck would the radiant heat be a problem or should I still look at lining a roof 2- Would putting that silver insulation foil under the colorbond on an unlined roof help or would it look crap. 3-Any other issues with this style of roof - I guess overflowing gutters under the floating roof, rain blowing in etc . Does any body have this style of roof that could help...? ie I live in the Newcastle area near the coast app 160 kms north of Sydney Thanks Re: Floating roof over deck 2Jan 29, 2010 2:20 pm Ok...I'm going to show you our cabana with colorbond roof, I am sure it's nothing like you want but I am not sure I follow what you want anyway but thought this might help. Our roof has gyprock underneath the colorbond, that's all and we were under there on that stinking hot Saturday a week ago and it wasn't too bad. On a normal day it's lovely and cool. Re: Floating roof over deck 5Jan 29, 2010 9:50 pm Suh, Love the Cabana. It looks lik a rendeed finish, are the fascias blueboard then rendered? I am building something similar but have concerns with cracks over time with blueboard/rendered construction/finish. Re: Floating roof over deck 6Jan 31, 2010 7:29 am JML Suh, Love the Cabana. Sorry, I missed this JML...yes blueboard and rendered Re: Floating roof over deck 8Apr 28, 2010 9:24 pm I have exactly the same question.I have been quoted for a floating skillion roof in aluminium with an insulated finish which for a 25m2 deck was $9500. Unfortunately the company has gone into liquidation and I now find myself missing a rather large deposit and wondering if the same effect can be achieved in timber for less expense. I also live in the Newcastle area, and can advise that I have seen a roof of this style in Green Point Estate near Belmont. An architect friend of mine thought the design is great for letting in light, but as to the exposure from rain and wind, I guess its hard to say, depending on which way you are facing. Also the floating skillion should allow for the heat to move through, therefore illiminating the need for insulation, however I prefer the finish it provides. Finally, I think you have to consider the load an angled roof would place on existing guttering and explore the options for minimising this. Please advise if you have begun as I am very keen to see, but can also let you know that there are some pictures on the Ausdeck website of this style of roof (in aluminium) To put anything over slate you will need to put self level compound over the entire area as slate various in thickness and is very un even. But I'm not sure… 3 6162 |
