Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Sep 18, 2012 8:09 pm Hi guys. I've been reading about building a deck over a concrete slab and it doesn't seem too hard using posts fixed to the slab. My problem is that I need to put the deck over a concrete ramp, and I'll need to put there 3 or 4 steps. What should I use to support the bearers on the ramp? Do you guys see another problem I'm missing? Cheers, Andres Re: Deck steps over a concrete slab ramp 2Sep 19, 2012 9:14 am Either galv brackets or simply wooden offcuts ( preferably treated pine ) dynabolted to the slab. With the slope you are going to have long steps maybe 450 - 500mm deep and they should be consistent down the slope. I know what I'd be doing - getting out the trusty sledgehammer and getting rid of the slab altogether - makes it a lot easier. I'd also replace those dinky posts for a couple of decent 90 x 90mm timber posts which would look way nicer as well. The existing concrete ramp has been poured up against the weatherboards which is where you will get rot if you're not careful. Kill two birds with one stone. Stewie Re: Deck steps over a concrete slab ramp 3Sep 19, 2012 1:46 pm Thanks for your answer Stewie! I was planning to use those Pryda Post Anchors, but I don't know how to solve the slope problem and how to suplement them if they are not long enough. But if I simple use timber posts with galv brackets dynabolted to the slab that would make it a lot easier. What timber post size would you recommend? and the bearer size? Another question, as you can see in the picture, I'll need to put the deck just over the concrete on the initial part of the ramp, would that be a problem? I only have 40-50mm gap between the slab and the door. Getting rid of the entire ramp would make things easier, but that would be a major work... I'd have that slab and dwarf brick wall in a skip in about three hours. Stuffing around with brackets, dynabolts etc and still ending up with only an average looking job will take you a lot longer plus a lot more hassle. Stewie Re: Deck steps over a concrete slab ramp 7Nov 21, 2012 9:42 am Hi. I've got the bolt-down brackets from Doyles in Mitchelton, QLD. I bought around 90 so I got a much better price. Also check with http://www.scrooz.com.au/ as I was told they were adding a new product line of brackets and stirrups. I found the brackets hard to find as I needed they not to be more than 130mm high and the Pryda ones are more than that.
