How do we go about doing it DIY. Council requires a building permit so would need plans, but how do we arrange these plans? Who do we contact? I have searched for some DIY kits online so maybe that is the path to take? We are in Melbournes north west. Thanks in advance. They should know local regs and can draw one up to match your specs and the councils. Re: New Pergola Advice 3Jan 19, 2010 10:00 am You may be able to go talk to the guys in the permits section at your council and get some guidance from them. Years ago my husband designed and built a carport and the council guys were very helpful when it came to what needed to be included on the plans. You need some basic drawing skills, but if you can use a pencil and ruler, you should be right. The council can also tell you things like required depth of post holes, minimum size of timber to be used for the various sections (posts, bearers etc) and distance from boundaries etc. All of that will need to be marked on the plan. If you don't have the confidence to do it yourself, then ring a few drafting services and ask them what they'd charge to do it for you. An online search or the local paper/Yellow Pages should find some in your area. Re: New Pergola Advice 5Jan 21, 2010 8:14 pm My council said they needed to know things like what kind of wood, footings to be used, size and types of bolts to be used etc etc 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Here in Geelong I have seen some houses having their pergola offset by 1.0m from the fence line, then others 170mm off the fenceline.... Our house garage is on the boundary and we wanted to follow the same line as it would look silly having this 1.0m no use area? Your thoughts?? Thanks, Mel =) Re: New Pergola Advice 7Mar 30, 2010 8:48 am Can't you take it up to the boundary -is this not allowed in your council? We have our garage wall on boundary too and we have a pergola at side of house right up to the boundary - we had to have those inset gutters so it doesnt overhang (same as garage does) and had to get a council form signed by owner of neighbouring house to say they did not object to it being built on boundary. Much better, no silly wasted space Re: New Pergola Advice 8Apr 11, 2010 10:20 pm If the proposed structure is going to require a reduced set back, the form that needs to be filled out is sometimes called an "Adjoining property owners consent form" or something to that effect. The council will have regulations about building materials able to be used when constructing right up to or close to the boundary. Most councils websites will have the form as a printable pdf download. They are also pretty good with helping on the phone... usually i think option 2 is much better with easy access to the garden without having to walk through the new sunroom which makes it a better room for guests and TV .a simple… 2 8199 Is there a building permit?
