Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jan 07, 2010 4:38 pm Guys I am looking to build my deck with modwood decking boards. Undecided yet which treated timber for the joists For my supports though will the ground screws be suitable? i swear i saw them used on a better homes or gardens (or simliar). Just thoughts its extra termite protection and easy to put in http://www.groundscrews.com.au/index.php?p=3_10 Deck will be 300mm of the ground. Re: Deck with ground screws? 2Jan 07, 2010 6:33 pm The treated pine joist sizes etc will depend on the span etc Those ground screws are unsuitable for for a heavy structure such as a large deck. You need to use stirrups concreted into a footing Re: Deck with ground screws? 3Jan 07, 2010 7:50 pm as long as your deck is less than 1m off the ground, they should be fine. if you are going higher, than the standards get a bit tougher and you may need to consult the companies installation requirements. again, treated pine joists will be fine, just ensure to consult the span tables for the required member sizing, most hardware shops have some on hand. if over 1 metre off the ground though you need a bit more knowledge about what you are doing. Re: Deck with ground screws? 4Jan 12, 2010 5:55 pm Groundscrews will be fine. Take a look at www.krinner.com.au and go to the photos and testimonials section. Check out the pre-fab school building and the uni deck. If the screws can be suitable for those sort of structures I think your deck will be just fine. Re: Deck with ground screws? 5Jan 13, 2010 7:17 pm think of the subsurface footprint or area a conc. stump and and conc. footing take up and how stable, strong etc concrete is. Now screw a peice of galv. metal into the ground and think about the same strength and stability principles, doesnt take an engineer to work out what will last and what wont Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: Deck with ground screws? 6Jan 15, 2010 7:24 am davinci think of the subsurface footprint or area a conc. stump and and conc. footing take up and how stable, strong etc concrete is. Now screw a peice of galv. metal into the ground and think about the same strength and stability principles, doesnt take an engineer to work out what will last and what wont Hmm, maybe it does. For it is engineers that certify them for use on much more substantial projects than a backyard deck. I think I will back the engineers on this one. Re: Deck with ground screws? 8Jan 18, 2010 6:52 pm We recently did an (SOG) slab for the garage and wet areas, the rest of the house was on Ground screws. Seems fine, the owner is a builder Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Sam There is a much stronger glue than liquid nails. It's called T Rex and will stick your timber to the concrete. Cheers Simeon 1 1547 l spoke to my plumber we decided to replace the rusted screws and keep all the screws with no rust, it will only cost a few hundred 7 8750 |
