Hi all -
I need your feedback as we can't decide what to do for our outdoor room. Merbau decking or pavers with Merbau edging. Pictures are on the website, and voting is enabled as well, just click here.
Cheers!

I think I almost prefer the pavers but you can never go wrong with just having timber. For us, I'm not sure what we will be doing for our alfresco bit. We may aggregate it or use large pavers. Re: Outdoor room - need your feedback! 3Dec 17, 2009 8:46 am I love the look of timber, but the maintenance bothers me, plus we have two dogs, so they tend to race around and scratch the surface (you should see our floorboards in our house ) Anyway, stumbled across this viewtopic.php?f=22&t=5013 we're now considering this instead of paving or timber decking... Wow! This stuff is concrete though with the timber stencil? I like. Re: Outdoor room - need your feedback! 5Dec 17, 2009 9:29 am Dollar Wow! This stuff is concrete though with the timber stencil? I think it's the best of both worlds combined. If you use a Once A Year path weed spray it will keep the weed removal to a minimum. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Outdoor room - need your feedback! 7Dec 17, 2009 12:08 pm Ya, the maintenance is a big factor for me, even over cost. Plus, I can lay the pavers myself - not so sure about the decking. That stamped concrete is interesting, but watching the stamped concrete fade and wear at my current place, I'm not sure if I'd want that. Then again, there are cars driving over it on a daily basis. Dukeman has put some good posts up, (I think I have one in here somewhere as well.. Maintenance is not hard, especially if you use the right equipment. Twist nails will prevent the deck from lifting, so general maintenance is a clean and re-oil after 6-12 months. Adrian B Re: Outdoor room - need your feedback! 9Dec 18, 2009 7:05 am I don't know why people are so scared of maintenance with decking. It's maybe a couple of hours of work twice a year.... Nobody's that lazy, surely? Sanding and oiling my outdoor furniture takes longer. We also had dogs the whole time we lived at our old house - with a large hardwood deck. They dug up the garden, chewed trees down to stumps, trashed the lawn, ruined flyscreen doors....but the decking was never a problem. I guess that's why it's called hardwood.... Don't even consider using treated pine to cut costs though, it's way too soft. We're having pavers in our al fresco room for a whole lot of reasons (cost is a biggie), but nothing to do with maintenance. I love our spotted gum decking at the front door. I'm looking forward to the honed teakwood sandstone pavers we're getting though. Variety is nice... One advantage of decking is that it's easy to bring it up to floor level, so you have a single level transition from indoors to out. Pavers need to be below the weep holes in brickwork, so there's always a step down. ....Yes, decking probably should be below the weepholes too, but nobody bothers about that and it hasn't caused any problems that I've ever seen . Re: Outdoor room - need your feedback! 10Dec 18, 2009 7:42 am Wow, great feedback everyone. Kek, you bring up valid points too. I suppose ultimately it comes down to cost and personal opinion, but the necessity to have the pavers below the weep holes is something I didn't consider, and I really like the idea of having that level transition between inside and the outdoor room. Thanks for pointing out the issue with treated pine also - it had been a consideration. Stefan Building the M3tr!con Liberty 42 at Stonecutters Ridge. The New Build Blog - "Life, In Progress." But it's soft and will scratch and dent - so not ideal with doggies. We were originally planning on having decking, and having settled on pavers now, I'm still a bit about the drop in level, but the pavers tick all the other boxes for us. With pavers, make sure you have a look at what's available and what the prices are before deciding which way to go. There's a big difference in $$ between coloured concrete and natural stone. Then with stone, there's a huge range of colours and THEN there's honed, polished, textured.... lots of decisions to make. For someone who can't make a split decision to save my life, I've been in real trouble through the whole build process. Stefan Building the M3tr!con Liberty 42 at Stonecutters Ridge.
