Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Dec 15, 2009 12:51 pm We're after a simple pergola (around 3.5m x 6.5m) to provide some shade over our back garden. The quotes we've received so far from pergola companies are $5000+. All we want is a basic pergola attached to the house - 2 posts with a cover (clear laserlight or similar). Does anyone have any recommendations or is there someone else we should try - do carpenters build pergolas or do we stick with the pergola companies?? Or is $5000+ reasonable for this type of job? Re: Pergola in Melbourne 2Dec 15, 2009 1:10 pm Did you try Jim's Pergola? Heard that they have good prices...I am going to contact them next month for my build.. Re: Pergola in Melbourne 3Dec 15, 2009 2:54 pm We got ours through Colourco. Ours is quite large but the price compared to Startco was significantly cheaper. www.colourco.com.au You could also try putting a request for quotes on Service central or the like - we did this originally when we were thinking of a timber pergola and got quotes from smaller 'handyman' types of businesses that were cheaper. The rest is labour - two competent people would smash that in two days easy. On topic though, one of my workmates has just built a deck and pergola, the pergola frame with LVL beams cost him around $800-900 in materials (inc the slab of beer for the incompetent helpers) all told but with just some shade cloth over the top for now, they're investigating sails and louver systems for the longer term covering. Afaik its treated H3 or H4, not sure which. Another mate of his is a civil eng who deals with building/housing structures so he spec'ed it all up and sourced the appropriate materials, the structure is a bit overboard (well for its current covering of shadecloth) from what I'm told as they didn't know the weight of the final covering and the motorized louvers they've been looking at needs tie points for cables etc as well as suspending the weight of the louvers themselves. I was just an extra pair of hands to help unload, i'm a systems eng so I was happy to leave the details to someone qualified in the area. We wanted ours done properly with permits. When I mentioned permits to just about all others I rang, they didn't want to know about it. Wouldn't even give me a price, although one did which was at $1K more than ART. They were prompt, professional and friendly. They handled all permit plans, permits and start and finish (and even the inspector to sign off on it after completeion). So I can recommend these guys in a heartbeat. Our pergola is a simple one. Laserlite roof (we wanted clear), it is about 6 x 3.5mtrs (approx) (see pics on my blog if they are there??). They did it over two days and it costed me total (incl plans) $4K. Get a quote from them and take it from there. Let me know if you use them! good luck A thankful person is a happy person.
