Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Dec 01, 2009 2:37 pm Hi the tiles on my small balcony are badly marked mission brown tiles and I'd like to update the look of my balcony - and actually use it this summer! I'm new to this DIY thing so any tips on how to lay decking over existing tiles would be most appreciated. The Balcony itself is 100 cm x 320cm long and its sunken so the decking would enclosed on all sides. As it is long and skinny, would it be best to run the wood across the width or across the length? I would be thinking acorss the width and so I plan on using 2 bearer beams - I assume that this would be suitable for a width of 100 cm. If the tiles are not completely level, what can I do? It has a slight skew at one end to allow water to run off. WWuld a layer of river pebbles do the trick? Or should this just be put in the too hard basket and I should focus on cleaning up my tiles as best I can. Any advice would be most appreciated, A Re: Decking over tiles on unit balcony 2Dec 01, 2009 8:46 pm What sort of height do you have to play with? If you run the decking longways ( 3 metres) you can single span the the 1 metre distance with 70x45mm joists if you want to keep them above the tiles which will be easier to keep them level. Alternatively you can simply batten the floor, I've seen it done with treated pine decking and then the hardwood decking screwed into it. Re: Decking over tiles on unit balcony 3Dec 04, 2009 11:33 am the balcony is stepped down to from a sliding door from the living room - there is about 5 inches of height before the lip of the tiles (which is the level of the lving room floor) It is enclosed on 3 sides (brickwall x 1, balcony sides x 2 which are solid concrete) with the fourth side being the access point from the unit as described above. I hope this makes sense - still learning how to post pics... cheers A Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 1290 First time building 2 storey home in NSW. Below Current plan have separate balcony. But thinking to do a multipurpose lounge with balcony (kind of sunroom) in first floor… 0 4271 Well you won't get cooked by the afternoon sun when sitting out on the balcony on a summers afternoon but you won't have much to look at besides the neighbours… 4 3213 |
