Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Oct 15, 2009 10:22 pm I'm hoping someone has some ideas on how to make a side gate inviting but still somewhat private. My house faces west. There is 3m along one side which will be an outdoor area. I want people to feel welcome to walk through the gate and into my house through the side door(glass sliding). I don't want a solid fence and gate, it feels like too much of a barrier. I want people to have an idea of what's happening beyond the gate but not see the specifics unless they're up close. The other problem is that the prevailing wind is a westerly, it's strong in my area and cold in winter. I can't plant a large tree as a wind break because the crossover is there. My driveway is curved. Any help would be appreciated. I just can't think of a fence and gate that could do both. Gravity. Its the law. Is it possible to move this thread to the outdoor living section. Does anyone know how. Gravity. Its the law. Perhaps two hedges kinda overlapping I have a good idea but can't describe it well! say you put one hedge 2/3 of the way across the space, starting from the house, then a metre or two behind that you put another hedge 2/3 of the way across, starting from the fence... so you have this kind of mini maze to draw people in and interest them... ok so i'm a big kid and like mazes Re: Welcoming side gate 4Oct 16, 2009 5:30 pm I like your idea englyn. I want to bring some mystery to the backyard that way. No room at the front though. The cross over is directly opposite the 3m side area. The setback is 6.5m and the driveway veers to the side to reach the garage. I won't have the room for two hedges. I appreciate the idea. Thanks englyn Gravity. Its the law. Have two walls with an opening in the middle with a pathway, then place another wall (using the same materials) at the end of the path, splitting it in two. I hope that sort of made some type of sense! Re: Welcoming side gate 8Oct 23, 2009 10:13 am I was going to suggest what JADED has said. I like those wooden gates/fences. And it fits what you said you're looking for - trepidman inviting but still somewhat private.
