Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Aug 13, 2009 3:30 pm Someone told me that a Natural Gas BBQ does not burn as hot as a bottle BBQ? Does anyone have reliable info on this point? www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Does Natural gas burn as hot as bottle gas? 2Aug 13, 2009 7:21 pm The jet sizes are different for both the natural gas and bolttle gas ( liquid propane) I have my outdoor bbq on natural gas , this is the best thing I had done when we built our house. Imagine NEVER having to change a bottle, NEVER running out of gas half way through a BBQ , and I have to say that I can still burn stuff on my BBQ if I do not pay attention and get yacking with the company and consuming the odd glass of red. There is no argument, natural gas all they way , you will never regret this decision ,I haven`t. Re: Does Natural gas burn as hot as bottle gas? 3Aug 13, 2009 7:46 pm Thanks rep334. We do have natural gas and will be getting a new natural gas bbq when our house is built. It's just that I heard that story from a credible source and I was wondering if anyone had noticed the difference. I agree with everything that you have said. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Does Natural gas burn as hot as bottle gas? 4Aug 13, 2009 8:03 pm It would be interesting to know if its true, but regardless of the answer, we are planning to use natural gas for the BBQ as well, it just seems to be the "natural" thing to do when you've got access to it I suppose Re: Does Natural gas burn as hot as bottle gas? 5Aug 13, 2009 8:15 pm Info came from a fireman so I am very sure it's reliable. PS- The reason I asked in the first place was because I wanted to run an outdoor heater and I think that it would not run as hot on natural gas. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Does Natural gas burn as hot as bottle gas? 6Aug 13, 2009 9:06 pm I've had natural gas on our BBQ for many years now. Its a high quality beefeater one, and now that we have sold the house I am panicking about losing it. Its the most temperature controllable BBQ I have used. Dont really know if its the NG or the BBQ itself i suppose. Warning: Remember to turn it off. LPG - the bottle will empty. NG it will keep on going for weeks (trust me i know!!) Re: Does Natural gas burn as hot as bottle gas? 7Aug 14, 2009 10:56 am We are having a gas fireplace installed in the home as it's being built. As we have no Natural gas in the area it will need to run off the LPG bottles. I would be keen on a scientific answer also. Maybe due to the densities of the gases there could be a higher burn temperature on one than the other. This may throw a spanner in the works, but the gas fireplace manufacturers quote higher BTU or heating power when off Natural than off LPG but this could also be due to gas pressures? Friend is a plumber and does Gas so I may ask him. Consequently, foods generally take longer to cook." Fact is that, as I said earlier , that the jet sizes are larger for natural gas than for bottled LPG. The reason is that it does not burn as hot as LPB but because they use larger jets then the difference is minimal. Same is worth looking at for Gas powered vehicles. The gas at the pumps is a mixture of propane and butane, cause it is cheaper to make this mixture than use pure propane. Just to prove my point of view ,if you go to a supergas outlet , have a good look as they have different pumps for the different gas. Have a look at the price ,the pure propane is about 4 cents a litre dearer and is worth every cent. The vehicle will deliver better performance and better economy as this pure propane burns better than the crappy mixture we all have to suffer in our vehicles. YOU GET ALL MAD AT MY COMMENTS .WELL DON`T ASK IN FUTURE AND MAYBE NOBODY WILL GIVE YOU AN ANSWER . GOOD LUCK .!!!!!!!! Goodness me! I just wanted to know if anyone knew the answer as I found it an interesting question. If you are able to have Natural AND Bottle gas, then perhaps TO SOME, it may make a difference when making their choice of Outdoor cooking. AFter all, the big BBQ's are not cheap, it's a big purchase for some of us. It's not something that I had ever considered before and I certainly did not realise the size of the jets were different, so I learnt something. Thank you. rep334 - Your initial comment re the jet sizes made lots of sense and was a good explanation. Maybe it should have been left at that. I don't think anyone (and I was the one who rasied the topic out of simple INTEREST) was particularly WORRIED about it rep334,. it was just out of interest. That's all, polite discussion and friendly conversation. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Does Natural gas burn as hot as bottle gas? 15Aug 19, 2009 1:30 pm Short answer - definitely YES I have had both gas bottle and mains gas BBQ's and it definitey takes longer for the plates to heat up and to generally cook the food. I found this as i like to cook my steaks on the BBQ and tend to time cookiing each side. Re: Does Natural gas burn as hot as bottle gas? 17Aug 19, 2009 2:32 pm The answer is No, Natural gas, methane (CH4) has a heat of combustion of 890kJ/mol or close to 39.7kJ/L. This is compared to bottled gas (LPG) which is mainly propane (C3H8) which has a a heat of combustion of 2,200 kJ/mol or 98.2kJ/L. This is because the carbon density of propane (81.8%) is higher than that of methane (75%). The higher the carbon density the more heat released on combustion. It is for this reason octane (C8H18) is valued in fuels compared to the normal pentane-hexane (C5H12-C6H14) mix since a higher octane rating means a more carbon dense fuel. Per mass basis though, methane actually releases more heat per kg. Re: Does Natural gas burn as hot as bottle gas? 18Aug 19, 2009 4:11 pm What was that? Seriously, thank for that answer and it seems to be very accurate, wow. That's amazing. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Does Natural gas burn as hot as bottle gas? 19Aug 31, 2009 7:15 pm Hi, this is my first time joining in... We had a bbq on bottle gas but had it changed to reticulated natural gas. We had to take the bbq back to get the jets changed, It was a few years ago and cost about $100 for the changeover. Hope that helps. Re: Does Natural gas burn as hot as bottle gas? 20Aug 31, 2009 8:17 pm Thanks Brenny and Welcome to Homeone!! Yes, well the reason I orignally asked the question was because when you buy a BBQ they are usually fitted out for either Natural OR Bottled gas. One or the other. I was wondering which one burned hotter, after a friend made a comment re this argument. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com I am not a brick expert, but rendering would be 1 option, it would be costly to do the entire house though.... 2 6677 Depends how much direct sun it gets.
