Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jul 18, 2009 7:30 pm Hi, we're renovating our house and knocking out a window and making it into a stacker door (I think - as opposed to french doors)...so the whole wall will be glass...inside we'll have repainted white and re-tiled (unsure on colour - am thinking light and airy but not sure if that'll be all too stark)...anyways, where you walk through the door, we'll put down a slab and cover the patio...probably about 5x4 metres. For the roof we were undecided whether to put a ceiling in it....and now I think given that inside will be all white/light it might be nice to have nice thick timber posts with exposed beams to give it a bit of earthiness....any thoughts? This roof would get the morning sun, but gone by early afternoon. It'll be a high roof, but would it be too hot not lined?? Thanks heaps. Re: Outside patio/deck - exposed beams or not???? 2Jul 19, 2009 8:47 am I have an entire house with exposed beams (think 1980's) so I may be prejudiced. If you put an internal lining outside with exposed timber beams there will be 2 problems: 1. When you have to paint the ceiling it is a pain to do as you have to cut in (technical term?) next to the beams with a fine brush and this is a horrible job. 2. The spiders tend to make their webs where the ceiling lining joins the beams and this is also nuisance. We have rough sawn beams and it is hard to remove the webs as they stick to the timber. Perhaps if it is only a small area these will not be issues for you. With a whole house of exposed beams it's a PITA. Re: Outside patio/deck - exposed beams or not???? 3Jul 19, 2009 9:38 am Hi, thanks for that... well the area will be about five metres by four metres....am not looking at doing ceiling at all...so it would be tin (???) on the roof, with beams and that's it. Good point about the spider webs where the ceiling joins and with having rough beams and sticking to it....hmmmm Sooo if we don't do exposed beams how else do you build in the roof? No beams exposed and flat ceiling kinda like you'd have inside??? Any thoughts??? thanks heaps, Kylie. Our 6m high Cathedral ceiling has 0 insulation, just plaster, wrap and tiles as far as I can tell. Wife likes the exposed beams, I hate the $600 per month heating bill,… 0 13486 After some ideas on making our patio kid friendly . Currently we have exposed aggregate. The patio faces west and is always in sun even though it has a shade directly… 0 3610 |
