Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jul 15, 2009 6:24 am Hi All, Sorry if this question has been done to death I am currently building a home about the size of a shoebox and as a result I do not have much of an indoor entertaining area So, I am looking at trying to create a bit of an 'outdoor room' from the back sliding door, but I only have a space of 3m (x 12m) to work with. I have had my heart set on a wood deck about 2.5m x 6m with the fake rendered style wall against the fence (to help create the 'room' and for privacy) and had ideas for synthetic lawn for the rest of the space and bamboo along the fence for privacy again. The only thing is, costs are creeping up on me and I want to know what people think of a paved area instead. I do like the idea of the large outdoor tiles but have no idea of how it compares in terms of look/upkeep/cost compared to wood deck and would just like to know what people generally prefer the look of, especially when working with such a small area!!! Thanks, Vanessa. Oh yeah, and also, I will be putting a pergola on of some sort (as yet undecided, need something that won't make the space look smaller, but must be waterproof/element proof like laserlight) and have currently bee quoted $5000 for 2.5 x 6m deck. Re: Wood Deck vs Paving 3Jul 15, 2009 1:41 pm We just got a hardwood decking with a measurement of 3*5.5m- its a step down decking (cause its for the front, so has three steps) and it costed us $3700! def be 'shopping' around for other prices! i was annoyed at what we paid, BUT i had my heart set on that too so ended up paying, def think $5000 is a lot!! Re: Wood Deck vs Paving 5Jul 15, 2009 5:35 pm I can provide any quoting needs as far as materials go if you need it Re: Wood Deck vs Paving 6Jul 15, 2009 7:02 pm Thanks for that, I thought I was getting ripped off, especially after reading the thread where per sq/m materials (being EVERYTHING) was $90per sq/m. I am def shopping around now, since I have M soil, flat ground, no real reason for specialist anything not even any steps!! So, off and about for quotes tomorrow again as I would really love a deck but thought maybe labour was just too expensive (I'm not the handy type to DIY!!!) LOL Thanks for the offer to break down the cost.... I read the epic post about it and feel better informed I am just getting told by a lot of places that the labour cost is standard. Re: Wood Deck vs Paving 7Jul 15, 2009 10:52 pm Keep in mind BCA requires decks to be 300mm above ground level Re: Wood Deck vs Paving 8Jul 16, 2009 7:50 am The clearance isn't an issue (expected that) more just a case of trying to explain that I don't have an incline or anything similar Thank you for that tip though.... I will double check the clearance from my door to the ground now!!! Re: Wood Deck vs Paving 11Jul 16, 2009 7:04 pm I went into an apparently 'cheap' place here in Canberra today and they quoted $330 per sq/m with Merbau or similar wood or $100 per sq/m if I use pine. The saga continues. Its only the difference in the decking price. The decking itself should cost you $390 in 90x22mm pine or $825 in 90x19mm merbau. The saga continues. Who are you getting to quote the job? we went through landscape gardens at first- found they tend to have a set 'per metre' price, which in some cases will work out more expensive, then we went for Pergola/ outdoor specialises and thats where we got our price! When l rang them l got that "we dont give you a sqm price as its not always the best price, we would like to come out and quote per job" to be honest at first i thought we were paying WAY too much, now that its completed i see how big it is, (we used merbau wood too) and the work that went into it, l can see that what we paid was a reasonable price! if you lived in Melbourne l would give you my guys number! mel_b woodsey We just got a hardwood decking with a measurement of 3*5.5m- its a step down decking (cause its for the front, so has three steps) and it costed us $3700! def be 'shopping' around for other prices! i was annoyed at what we paid, BUT i had my heart set on that too so ended up paying, def think $5000 is a lot!! Re: Wood Deck vs Paving 15Jul 25, 2009 3:27 pm Just for sharing, I just had a hard time fixing my outdoor especially my deck due to my busy schedules. Then my friend told me to visit this site weblink removed by site admin I saw many style of decks, fences, and railing that are really fit to my preference. I just purchase there online and the company teach me on how to install it. It was safe and their products are durable. I'm proud to be the one of their satisfied customers Re: Wood Deck vs Paving 16Jul 26, 2009 5:54 pm Thanks for sharing Satisfaction, but your linked email address shows me you're more than a "satisfied customer"! Nice try! Good Bye! Re: Wood Deck vs Paving 18Mar 04, 2010 5:39 am Hard to say if quote is as you say " over the top" as it depends on quality of construction. Are they using stainless steel screws as opposed to fixing off with a nail gun? Not all timbers are of same quality. If you think quotes vary so much check out some of there work and see the difference. A quality deck should last min. 20 years so chose well Back to original question I think alfresco rooms off houses are better in a hardscape material as close to material inside, so if you have tiles continue outside Landscape Design & Construction http://cherub.squarespace.com/ Re: Wood Deck vs Paving 19Mar 07, 2010 1:39 pm also depends on whether excavation is included, what sort of posts have been specified- merbau, treated pine, concrete? Is there also some balustrade included in that? We are tossing up between a Jarrahdale radiant wood fire (the Pioneer) and a convection wood fire (Innovator or Countryman) but cannot decide on which type of wood fire is… 0 5250 I had 28m2 of engineered pavers laid six months back and it was difficult to find someone not taking the pi$$. Internet suggested it should be $85-100/m2 to lay them.… 3 12386 yeah i couldnt picture it issue either, but i could clearly picture what they were doing wrong haha 2 5295 |
