Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jul 13, 2009 11:04 am I will have 2 meters from the side of my house to the boundary fence which is on the east side. Any ideas of what I can do with this space? I was thinking putting in a timber deck from house to fence running for about 7 meters with a small sitting area. My main entertaining area is directly out the back of my house with bbq big table etc. Re: 2 Meters from House to fence, Ideas? 2Jul 13, 2009 11:38 am I must admit my first thought was what's on the other side? I've seen some very nice outdoor areas, stacked stone feature walls, fountains, the works . . . and visible above the fence are the neighbours windows and laundry door. When garden designers talk about "borrowed landscape" I don't think that's what they had in mind. So I'm wondering what is on your side, what is on the other side, how tall is the fence, is there any slope affecting visual privacy or drainage, etc. Re: 2 Meters from House to fence, Ideas? 4Jul 15, 2009 5:59 am I would also love to hear some suggestions!! Sounds like were in a similar boat I have 3m from door to fence, 1.8m fence height and neighbours alfresco area behind. I was thinking a 2.5m x 6m deck with a fake wall behind?? (like the rendered wall look with feature lighting or water feature) running along fence for the 6m to block out neighbours and create a more 'outdoor room' effect. Then wanted to run bamboo along rest of fenceline maybe in white planter boxes with synthetic lawn to cover the open space. The problem for me is well, cost and then what to do about a roof, as I need something that won't make the space smaller and will give me protection from elements. Re: 2 Meters from House to fence, Ideas? 6Jul 17, 2009 1:09 am elastic It’s a 1.8 meter fence, Neighbours have their alfresco on that side, no drainage issues, relatively flat. I think that's the height of fence my in-laws got and it helped a lot with privacy. It's hard to know what to suggest. (I personally would still want plants.) I do think 7m of decking in such a narrow space is a bit much. Perhaps you could have a 1m path widening out into the sitting area at the most appropriate spot. Some narrow plants beside the path (my in-laws place had nandinas). What is the fence like, would you want to pretty it up at all? nessbrown Then wanted to run bamboo along rest of fenceline maybe in white planter boxes with synthetic lawn to cover the open space. I don't know but I've heard that even in planter boxes you need to be careful with running bamboo, and clumping bamboo, while easier to control, can still grow to a huge size.
