Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jun 30, 2009 5:13 pm Hi I recently got a quote for an 8m long 600mm high retaining wall for the front of my house. I had requested it in timber to keep it as cheap as poss. the quote was over $6500. Does anyone else think this is excessive? Re: retaining wall 2Jul 01, 2009 11:35 am Whilst your quote is excessive; Get it quoted in Masonry. You should find that is more cost efficient at the moment. Labour is more but material is less. Others will correct me (hi Davinci) in method and measurements but essentially here is what I would do. To put it into perspective, I bought 400mm x 200mm x 200mm masonry blocks for around $3.60 each i think. 600mm high = three courses of 200mm high blocks. 8 metres = 20 blocks per course so 60 blocks = $216. Get some lengths of Reo and cut them to 1 metre lengths using an angle grinder or bolt cutters. Dig a 450mm wide x 300 deep foundation, line with appropriate reo,the concrete. I would then lay the first cours of blocks in when the concrete is almost dry. Dont forget to use a stringline. I would also hammer in the 1 metre lengths of reo every 4 blocks, so that they stick out 600 from the foundations. Once the first row is dry and solid you can do your next 2 courses. If the wall will be 'load bearing' I wold fill the cores with concrete before moving dirt against the wall. It might take a little while to do it, but it will save you thousands, I kid you not.. Remember you can paint or render the wall once dry. Just a thought Adrian B Re: retaining wall 4Jul 02, 2009 9:02 pm sounds about right adrian (few to many beers when you spelt davini) i would on every second course lay horizontal y123 deform bars this helps to prevent the perp. joints from opening up. also even with out back fill i would core fill due to the lack of vertical strength in besser walls Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that.
